i went to bryce canyon and went to the usual look out spots but noticed i couldn't capture the entire view of scenery the way i wanted with just one shot, or even three shots. i had to use 9 images taken in a square to get this. i have 2 more sets like this to go through. this was my first attempt. see anything i missed?

Looks Great to me.
One idea, maybe clone-out the shadow of the camera at the bottom center.

can anyone see those spots up in the clouds? they just started showing up during this trip and i don't know what to make of it. doesn't seem like i have a dirty lens. do you think the pressure in the plane flight messed it up?

That looks like a great place to visit and shoot.

Mind sharing your procedure with getting the 9 shots for it? I understand you can use stitch-assist to line up the images vertically or horizontally... but how'd you manage to get BOTH?

i used a tripod and was careful to leave a nice enough overlap for the images. i started with the sky and went left to right, then down, then right to left, then down, then left to right. i didn't use any stitch assist program. just photo shop and my own technique. you've got to soften the hard edges of the images and be skillful with the distort tool.

It is a shame about the distortion. I wonder if a longer focal length and more images would help?

Just a couple of my favorite stiching sites:

Everything you need to know and then tons more:

And a 196 (!) image sitch. Final image is 1.09 GIGApixels!

that big image was take at the same place this was. what distortion are you talking about? the horizon? if anything i'd want a smaller focal length. a nice wide angle 26mm or lower lens would be nice.

Dust on the sensor?

here's #2. i don't like it as much as the first. now that i think of it, i should have tried doing two rows of vertical shots for less distortion. but i kind of like the distortion.

I think it see them. Before you worry about the plane wrecking your lens, shoot a clear blue sky and see if it's still there.

Go to B&H and pick up a Rocket Blower..

BTW: I think the image you created is great!

Rob and RadTech,

The first thing that I thought of when I saw this was the gigapixel image. I thought 'wait a minute, I have seen this before!' You'll have to out-do him and create a bigger image!

He uses panotools which are really good. There are various interfaces that you can use PTAssembler for windows and Hugin for linux. Definately give his website a read, also his galleries are worth a glance.

The part that bugs me about panoramas is straight parts of the image near the camera are curved. Is this the case here? Perhaps you could crop alittle of the bottom to eliminate the shadows and the curvature.

part of it is a natural curve part of it is distortion. it's no more distortion than a small mm wide angle lens would have.

got any specific stitch programs for the mac? :]
really though, i prefer using my own methods. i'm a control freak and they've seemed to work so far.

ps - i had no idea someone had already tried this same prcedure at the same state park :o

Panotools was made for control freaks! It was originally a commandline program. Not sure about a mac interface though.

You set up the numbers from your camera FOV, focal length and such or it can calculate them from the EXIF in the files. It will try to determine the barrel distorsion to correct it as well.

Then you set all the control points by hand and it will combine them in any one of many formats. It will export them to a layered PSD, layered tiff or others if you so desire.

I think it deserves at least a casual glance.

sounds cool, but if it ain't mac compatible it won't/can't be used by me 8) :(
