which lens best to use?
i have a 17/55mm IS 2.8 lens so am thinking this is prob a good one whack up the iso and keep the aperture 2.8 ... have i answered my own question.lol.

For something like this depending on your budget and where you'll be sitting, maybe the 85 1.8 or the 85 1.2L, 50 1.8, or 50 1.4.
These are primes (not zooms) but the apertures are very wide, which are the better low light performers - - ESPECIALLY in situations where you cannot use a flash. Please look at the performing arts section of this forum. The school play would fall under that umbrella and those folks can really guide you much better than I can. A 2.8 aperture may not be enough.

This is one of the tasks my 135 f/2 is for....but that is a $900 lens. Cheaper options are the 100 f/2 and the 85 f/1.8.
As much as I like my 17-55, I think you will find 55mm too short unless you can sit right up front. If that lens is your only choice, get as close as you can, shoot and crop as needed.
