Hello everyone. I hope im posting in the right section. I think I would really enjoy shooting sports of any kind since action is fun. However, I have gone to 2 events and was told im not allowed to shoot pictures. Are most of you guys hired to shoot these events because I thought i could just go and shoot some pics. I know the one person that called security was a photographer. Do you think she thought i was trying to steal her business. I know this is a dumb question but any responses would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well, most pro events will not allow you to shoot pics without prior approval from the org. putting on the event. Many events have contracts with someone already, check with the team or the sponsor. I have been approached many times by parents or the AD of a school to make sure I am not some weirdo, if they only knew. I just present my press pass, other wise check with the school or someone in charge. Pro events or teams have restrictions on what you can bring into the arena, check it out. I suggest if you want to really work on your technique, start with local sports teams, ie. high schools, kid team sports etc. Until your comfortable don't try to sell your work. There are many studios looking for free lance folks, try to hook up with one of them. You will need a portfolio so work on that as well. I am sure you will get many other ideas from other folks here, many that can spell better than me.

Knowing the events and who? told you you can't... also knowing what country you are in could help as it does vary and especially if children involved. .. But normally you would presume an organised event will have an organised photographer :)

Even at High School games you have to have permission to be on the field..
Talk to the event person and see what they require..and GO FOR IT.

I take pictures of our local high school teams - both football and baseball. I simply go to the coach and ask if he is ok with me doing this. For the couple of seasons that I've done this, I've had no problems getting onto the field. I'm even given free admission into the games.
