I recently read on the Strobist about cross lighting and really liked the effect. I gathered a few of the grandkids together and headed to a local park to give it a try. Little Fidget was doing what he does best and crawled too close to the flash unit with this result.

Pictures were taken at 1:00 PM on a very sunny day.

Comments/suggestions always appreciated.

For comparison purposes here is one that I think did work fairly well. Sparkle, quite bored with the whole endeavor.

The background almost looks fake.

The lighting is good on 2 out of 3 of the grandkid's on the first shot. On the second shot if the hair was back from her face it would be easier to comment, but it looks as if it would be OK. The back ground looks good on both of them. (And fore ground)
As it was a test run thanks for showing us.

Thanks for all the comments. It was an interesting exercise and I will test it again soon because I really like the look when it works correctly. Here's one that is a bit closer to correct I think.

I did a couple test shots like this once too.. :)

Great job on them. It's fun to reduce exposure on the background and let your flash work as a main light for the subject. Really works to separate subject from BG and the added flash reduces the shadows and also crisps things up some. :)

Great job! :) And cute kiddos of course! :)

Thanks Kristy. This was actually a cross lighting test. Exposure on the camera was set for the subject/background in full sunlight, flash used pointing toward subject/sun, about 10 feet to camera left. I really like the effect when it works- saw it on the Strobist site this month.

I'm constantly amazed at what one can do with a couple of decent flash units, any time of day or night. Great fun.
