It's a rilly rilly ugly fish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ling_cod).

That article said that a Ling could get up to five feet long and weigh up to 26 lbs. I would hate to drag that one up on deck. Geez, the ones I caught were around two or three feet long, maybe 12 lbs, and they nearly beat the boat to death. Mean fish!

I've never caught a ling, but I've caught plenty of other rock fish.

The best fighters though, are California Sheephead, especially the mature ones, after they've become male. You'll definitely know when one of those has latched onto your line. I've landed a few of them. Very tasty fish, too!

Biggest fight I ever had from a fish was when I had a Ling cod on my line, and a Sea Lion decided he wanted it, too. Poor Ling was in the middle of a tug of war.

I won. ;) :D

I am now edumacated...

Wait, you've been all over the world, and you don't know what's a Ling cod?

Wait for a second... I want to savor this....

A Ling cod is a type of rock fish, living waaaay down deep. Unlike the other cod fishes, like the Red, Rock, etc., the Ling is much, much uglier. Not that the others were great prom dates. The Ling has a large head, and a skinnier body, and is much larger/longer (couple of feet long) than the other cods. Oh, and it also has big sharp teeth... trust me, I know this first hand. Really.

As for eating? If you ever have the choice between regular rock cod and a Ling, go with the Ling. Very nice eatin' fish. Tender white meat, great flavor. Great BBQ'd or made into fish 'n' chips.

I don't fish when we travel... I don't even fish at home in the Bahamas...

Good thing you won... imagine if he won... you'd be fish food

That reminds of a time my brother handed me his fishing pole and said, "Here, hold this!" and ran to find a deckhand. He had caught a Calico Bass, then a Sea Lion took it. I was losing line pretty fast until it finally snapped. I saw that thing a few hundred feet from the boat, looking back at me...

My brother also caught a ray of some kind once. It took forever to get it up to the boat so the deckhand could unhook it. It was just dead weight from the bottom to the top, about like trying to reel in an old tire filled with cement.

Then, there was the time my brother caught a flying pelican (his line wrapped around it's wing in mid-flight as he was casting). He got it on the boat with the help of our deckhand friend Scott, and while Scott was trying to unwrap the line from the wing, the pelican panicked and regurgitated a stomach full of half digested mackerel. That was the most disgusting smell I've ever experienced! It cleared that side of the boat for a half hour... NOBODY would go there!

The request still stands, if you eat fish.... You gotta try Ling cod. Right up there with Salmon, if it's done right.

Good thing you won... imagine if he won... you'd be fish food

NO KIDDING! That ol' Sea Lion looked pretty ticked. He must've sat out there for a half an hour glaring at me.

That reminds of a time...

Poor Pelican!!

OK, here's my Ling cod story. My dad was a commercial fisherman. He would wake me up at Oh Dark Thirty to go down to the harbor so we could get out to the canyon in time. My job, whether I wanted to do it or not, was to pick up the fish that was caught, put it into an old burlap bag and keep that bag wet. We had this huge run of fish. Cod all over the deck. I was busy picking up fish and putting them in the bag (I got 10% of the profits for the work... good money for a nine year old.) while Dad was busy yanking these things out of the Monterey Bay. The best way to pick up a cod where they didn't fight you and they didn't squeak out of your hands was to put your thumb into their mouths, and use their bottom jaw as the "handle". Works wonders. In the midst of all this, Dad calls out, "Hey, don't put your thumb in a Ling Cod's mouth".

I'm nine years old. At that point, I have no idea what is a Ling cod. I knew it was a fish, but outside of that, no clue.

There was a pile of about twenty cod on deck. I was busy picking up, bagging, earning my pay. There was this ugly dinosaur looking thing down there that needed to be "bagged". So I did what I was brought to do. I stuck my thumb into the mouth....

CHOMP.

The Ling bit down on my thumb to the bone and would not let go. Blood every where. I was screaming like a little girl. Dad, of course, was cracking up in the stern. He finally put his pole down, came back and pried the fish off of my thumb and then immediately stuck the bleeding digit into the Pacific.

Nice. Salt water in the a dino bite.

I never mis-identified a Ling again. And Dad never failed to tell that story over and over and over again.

Yes, we stopped in every port for a day and had our own guide to ferry us around. That way if I want to stop to take a photo -I just yell (and I do... scared the life out of few drivers in my time...) and if Alex needs to pee, which he always does st the most inopertune times (goes with being 10 I suppose) we don't have a busload of old people angry at us... :):)

All this reminiscing about the days when my brother and I practically lived on the sportfishing boats around here made me wonder how our old friend Scott is doing. He moved to Hawaii several years ago (his family is filthy rich). I just did a Google search on his name and it looks like he's captain of his own sportfishing boat now. In 2004 his boat won the 16th annual Maui Jim Fire Cracker Open fishing contest when they hauled in a 701-pound Blue Marlin. Cool!

I'll vouch for the Lightroom book.

quick grabs for now

Great shots, Crissa. What software do you use for PP? Curt set up Noise Ninja way back when. I have no clue what the different settings do and he usually does that part of our processing in a batch. But, I have found the One Step Noise Removal in PaintShop Pro X works very well when I'm PP'ing single shots. It is all software driven, all I do is click and wait a few seconds. If your software has something similar you might be happy just using it.

edit: and Allie went from a size 11 to size 13 shoe overnight! Her feet have never grown fast before.

Just wait one night your kids will have grown into those feet...and yes I do mean ONE night, least ways it seems like it happened overnight.

The Boring Boys in Brass:

Oh greate just what this world needs, a couple of Bad Brass Boring Boys.

Lightroom puts things automatically into folders by date regardless of body used.

It does? Is that the default? As I have it always go into the 30D folder then name a new subfolder. Usually by date and subject/place. I also have it do an autobackup into the EHD. Come to think of it, those on the EHD are in automatically put in a folder by date. So, erhm....nevermind.

No he had lens replacement.

Thats great, glad the first one went well, hoping for the same success on the second eye.

Yuck. My monitor just suddenly started to take on a nasty blue tint in the lower left corner. I've been suspicious that it's been slowly dying for a while now. Looks like the end might be near... :( I loved this thing, and I don't want to go to LCD!!!

Oh, and I think the clock battery in my PC is dead. I powered the computer down for a while the other day (something I very rarely do), and when I booted back up, the date was somewhere in the 1980's. The computer is nearly four years old (the monitor is about three), so I guess I am pushing my luck here. Looks like I might be spending some money soon. And I was saving up for a 5D... :(

I already have a cheap laptop. It's older than the desktop... ;) (Only by a month, though...) The laptop is my "keep in touch via slow dialup while traveling" computer.

I've never been able to properly work on pictures on the laptop. The image quality on the screen just plain sucks. To date, I've only seen one LCD monitor I liked, and that was a $2,000 one we got to play with at work for a couple months maybe two years ago, before it was moved to it's permanent home in the Radiology Department.

Well, the PC works for now, as long as I don't shut it down. And even then, it only loses the date. So, I'd rather use it instead of the laptop. I just need to shop around for a new monitor (and CRT's are so hard to find any more). And eventually, a new computer anyway. Mine is a bit too obsolete, as it is.

I don't think I've ever seen a black tabby before, to be honest.

My Tupper (the brat) is a black tabby. Actually, I believe he's a Maine Coon because of how freakin' ginormous he is. I learned my lesson when my last computer suffered a fatal hard disc attack. All of my RAW files are immediately backed up two two external HDs (one of which is then immediately unplugged and turned off afterward) before I even look at them. My edits and documents are backed up to another external HD pretty regularly as well. If this PC were to die for some reason, I wouldn't lose very much...

Time for me to get some sleep. It's way, way, way past my normal bedtime. I blame my supervisor at work for that. When I got to work at midnight this morning, I noticed I was scheduled to work my normal midnight-9:30am shift, like always. But, he left a gap... Next on the schedule was Elmer, coming in at noon.

So, I stayed late and got a couple extra hours of OT for the 5D/computer fund... And it was a very frustrating day there anyway. Nothing but problems the entire 12 hours...

I have the H2 with a Phase One P45 (soon to be 45+) back. The 39 megapixels are extraordinary!!!

The canons I carry are the 1ds and th e5d... I figured if I was going to go up - I might as well go all the way up! :)

When I added a EHD to back things up I used their software for back up but have decided I don't like it and want to backup differently. When I did this it created a dcm file for every picture i have. It is a pain in the but and I delete them every time I open a folder but that is a pain. I have tried to search for file name to get them all on screen at once and delete but it has not worked for me. Can someone more computer savvy tell me the best way to do this?

Interesting photos! I don't understand their culture, but I'm sure they don't understand ours either.

They are very nice people -very unaffected although that will change. The two unaffected cultures I have seen int he last year... Bhutanese andd Papua New Guinea are already showing signs of Western invasion... lots of plastics coming in. Maybe not so much to the New Guinea tribes yet, we had to take three planes - progressivly smaller, a boat and then a jeep to get to the hotel. It is out in the Sepik River Basin. They discovered new tribes 10 years ago that had never been seen before, and there may be more out there. When you fly over the highlands of New Guinea - you can see how people can remain unnoticed...

A funny story for you... when the Christians decided to go on in and convert everyone, they showed them pictures of heaven and hell... and couldn't figure out why the locals all wanted to go to hell instead of heaven... wellt hey figured out that it was becasue of the images they showed... heaven was depicted as white angels floating around on clouds and hell was little black devils thrwng white men into burning pits.... the local (being cannibals) could relate better to hell than to heaven....

true story...

The hassi isn't that mauch heaveir thatn the 1ds, it fits really nicely in the hand. The range of lenses isn't the best but when you so many megapixels to work with, a 100% crop is very doable as long as you are in focus. I wouldn't say it is a sports/action camera but it is interesting ot play with.
When we go to Kenya it will still be the Canon with the 300 2.8 that gets the biggest workout... I am a bit of a purest when it comes to taking photos, I find it hard to take a photot with cropping in mind...

Just watching the news. Even more flooding in the UK over the weekend.

Last friday, our town was cut in half by a river that had burst it's banks. In order to get out to dinner, we had to drive around the town in a 30min journey that should take 5.

The flat we used to live in was flooded but 2-3ft of water, so we're glad we've moved before then. Those flats used to be very saught after, but after this, the value has nose-dived (there's never been floods there before).

The house that my mother used to live in is likely to be flooded out fairly soon (she used to live pretty close to the Thames).

No it is not:rolleyes: for the price it is a fantastic close up sports lens. Shooting across a field is not it's strong point. The problem is I am not thrilled with the 100-400mm and to get a fast prime 2.8 over 300mm is beyond my current budget.

To tell you the truth, I found F3.5 to F4 to be the best apertures (remember focal length is going to affect your dof too). 2.8 was a bit too narrow. 3.5 was thin, but adequate. Can you get into 300 at that aperture in your budget?

Very good point I find I often have to shoot wide open to get the shutter speed I want. I would much rather stop down a bit. The 300mm is a bit of a stretch. I would sell the 100-400mm and put that toward it. I can do it I just shouldn't right now.I have been behind since last years slow down.

I feel it is a bit soft even after sending it to Canon. I have seen a lot of debate on this lens and some great shooters use it with great results. For me the copy I have is great for a bird at 15 yards zoomed in to 300mm+, it looks fantastic. A horse and rider at 100yards at 400mm wide open and it looks like it is soft.

Everyone remebers that I don't like beer Right?
Everyone remebers what I do like to drink Right?

the hardest shot to get is ball on bat, other than that when you are far away I find the rest are pretty much what you get when you shoot.

Very nice shot too Jamie :) (Of course, if it'd said tequila, I'd have asked you for a print ;) )

how do you physically tell all of the 1Dwhatever's apart? Is there some characteristic or do you need to see the model written on the camera?

well I suppose the biggest difference is the LCD's because they are different sizes the 1D has 1.8" and 1Ds the same I believe and 1DmkII & 1Ds have a 2in screen and the 2n has a 2.5 in screen and the MKIII a 3in.

Otherwise there some differences in the body shape (but not a lot)...

Ah - this makes sense - and sounds pretty hard to catch! Of the ones I've looked at so far, this is the closest I have to that.
