Besides, half the fun is the investigation, trying to figure out where they are. I've gotten a few that were in places I've never been to, just from a little Google research. ;)

You and me both, Lonnie. If I recall, the only places that I've actually known have gone before I've seen them. The rest I've had to hunt down.

I got one of Roy's in less than a minute when he posted a picture of a famous building in San Francisco. Other than that, they've all required some research.
He has me stumped this time, though. I really thought I was on the right track with a battlefield...

Let the games begin:
I go to those Harbody gyms. I like to wear a full body Spandex outfit with leg warmers and a psychedelic headband. I try to remember to not shower prior to workout days and to eat lots of garlic. I don't really touch any weights, but I like to strut around the gym acting like I'm a finalist in the Mr. Universe pagent. I offer unsolicited and free advice to people. Occasionally, if I work up a sweat from just flexing at the mirrors, I'll be sure to lie down on the bench press bench and rub up against other equipment. It's kinda like a hobby for me.
Really? Oh, no. Mom will be crushed.
You're cracking me up today, Kody!!
Ooo, someone who likes to hear himself talk. I have no idea what he means. But then again, I'm the villiage idiot.
They print on platinum sheets. It's a new fad. It'll pass.
G'MAE, All.
Hardbody gyms huh? I used to work out at one.. There was this huge smelly dude that would always try to control ALL the equipment... oh hey man, i'm on that.. blah blah blah Me and my friend always made fun of him. :)
Pudds, is your mom crushed cause a yungun likes Neil D or because I think he's the man? lol
I'm glad I could brighten your day. :)
He actually clarified himself somewhat..
PLATINUM SHEETS!? i need to git me some of them!
 She is the most gorgeous bride I've ever worked with. Seriously.
I only have one problem with that.. I didn't see any more photos of her posted. lol

The star affect comes from the aperture so it is "natural" anytime you have a strong light source in an image.

I think that would be a lot more confusing. Especially with people like Jo and Athena who tend to move around between time zones a lot. They'd have to be constantly updating their profiles for the forum to keep their times accurate.

Hiking question:
The wife and I are going hiking up in the cascades on Saturday. I'm debating on if I want to bring my heavy tripod with me or not. Mostly Lonnie but anyone else that has much experience... 1) Is a tripod usually needed on a hiking trip? (probably depends on locations eh?). 2) It's probably 5 mile round trip, am I going to get SICK of toting a 7lb tripod around that long? I would hate to miss an opportunity for even 1 stellar shot but at the same time I would hate to tote the dang thing around for no reason.

First weekend I had my 3021 tripod (near 7 lbs) I went for a 3.5mile round trip hike. If it is strapped to your backpack right, you won't notice it THAT much - but it is heavy.
It all depends what you are going to shoot. Do you want to blur water? It just depends... I used my tripod on the hike because I was doing long exposures in the evening (after sunset) - but other than that, I wouldn't have needed it.
theague
24th of July 2007 (Tue), 13:09
Yes, i'd love to blur water as I like those shots a lot. I'm just not familiar with where we're going so I don't know if there will even BE any streams. I'd hate to get up there though and find some and not have the Tpod. We're probably not goign to get up to the Mt's until about 2pm so there is a chance I could end up in later afternoon/evening with lower light...

I always bring a tripod with me on hikes! I like to do a lot of IR shots, and the occasional summit self-portrait, and a tripod is ideal for those situations. Not to mention the occasional stream or waterfall I encounter where the sunlight is shaded by trees, or I want a long exposure to smooth the water.
That said... I'd never bring a heavy tripod. Several years ago, I bought a Bogen Manfrotto 724B Digi Compact Tripod specifically for this purpose. It's lightweight yet very sturdy, compacts to a nice small size while still being able to expand almost as tall as my 3021 Pro legs, can support a decent amount of weight, and came with a carrying case that attaches nicely to my backpacks.
If I didn't have that 'pod and my only other choice was my 3021, I'd do without. It's just not worth lugging that kind of weight around. Trying to carry a heavy tripod on a hike will just wear you out and make the hike a miserable experience. If you don't have access to a 724B or equivalent, maybe a Gorillapod or some kind of tabletop tripod would be an acceptable alternative.
theague
24th of July 2007 (Tue), 13:29
I'll check out the 724B per your suggestion. I might just end up borrowing my Dad's tripod again. The same one I took on my trip to Scotland, that worked ok. lol

I'll check out the 724B per your suggestion.
I should have mentioned, I believe the 724B has been discontinued. I recommended it to Riley a while ago then had trouble finding it when I Googled. I'm pretty sure there's a more recent version though, but I don't know the new model number. Search for "digi tripod" or something like that, and narrow your search down to Manfrotto.

Newest version is the 725B, which B&H sells for 112.95. It looks like it doesn't have the ability to swap heads, is that correct? How do you find the function of the head that's on it? I'm assuming the 724 and 725 are close enough for your opinion to matter. :)

No, the head is not removable. Mine has a built-in ballhead. I've never had a problem with it, though.
Hmmm... Another thing I just realized I should mention. I hike with an Olympus C-8080WZ (with battery grip), not a DSLR. It's a bit lighter than a DSLR, though the battery grip does add some weight.
Check the specs to make sure it can support the weight of the body and lens combo you plan to hike with.

. Kody, I always take my tripod hiking. I'd rather have it and not need it, than not have it and need it.
I use the canon strap that came with my camera... one end is tightened around the neck, just under the ball head, and the other end is looped around the closed legs, then tightened to make a strap the kinda looks like a rifle strap. (Does that make sense at all?) I just wear it like a sling over my shoulder, and it works nicely.

jo, ive always wondered how you get that star effect from the sun or light poles in the street at night...my attempts are round sun
Good questionn, I have no idea how did it - it was probably because the sun was right behind the monument...
Max try exposing for an area of sky near the sun then using that exposure recompose and take the shot with the sun just peaking out from behind something like leaves of a tree, clouds, or a statue like Jo's nice image. Preview the image and lengthen or shorten the shutter speed a bit to get the effect you want.

So I went to The Camera Shop... over priced! lol They're selling the 10-20 sigma for $550 still and that's "on liquidation sale".. what a joke. It's $499 on B&H and it's not on a shelf with people clicking away on it... so silly. Oh and they had some tripod BOXES but no tripods.

yeah, nothing worth while in there... i guess it's no surprise that they're going out of business. they've never been the most friendly place. I've been in there a few times and never really bought anything due to SUPER high prices. Today just re-affirmed my notion. They have about 10,000 old school film lenses for sale and about 5 for Nikon Digital and 6 or 7 for Canon digital... so silly!

no - I am not sure we are going to do that this year. I don't have any Easter egg color tablets left and honestly we've been very distracted by other things.
For academic reasons, we are going to be staying in the states until mid-October. We have lots of hard work ahead of us, but hopefully we can get things back on track in that time... Wish us luck! :D
So....lots of arrangements to make and the house sale is off - for awhile at least. :)

So Athena you have to enroll the kids in school? Yuk!
We might be moving in the next couple of weeks and I am on the fence because of the whole school thing. Eli isn't great with change (understatement) and while the schools where we are probably moving to are great I can't see moving and then right away starting in school, but perhaps he'll surprise me?? I dunno.

So Athena you have to enroll the kids in school? Yuk!
I've already gone most of the way through enrolling them in a private school here. Still need teacher referrals from their school in Thailand. How exactly to ask for that.
"so hey, since you didn't teach my kids to a high enough standard and I now have to shell out thousands of dollars for tutoring and enroll them in a school in the states, could you write a referral for us?" sigh...

Matthew doesn't like change either, but I've found (cause we've been through a lot of it) that if I talk to him and explain the situations in as much detail as is humanly possible (sometimes this involved a good deal of research on my part including field trips and photos) that he accepts the new situations and actually agrees with our decisions. I had to explain to him tonight why he will be in second grade here. sigh again.
Will you be moving far? Into a bigger place?

long story...the place I work at has an apartment upstairs, 2 bedrooms (yay) and access to the whole 'house' and such. There was someone living there...I fired him last week or so. I hadn't thought much about the place till he moved out, and looks like we could move in next week or so. It is about 20 minuted from where we live now, a good town school wise but not particularly ethnically diverse but we figure we will make it moreso! We would pay no rent, apartment basically comes with working there, we would rent out our place.
It is win win, Eli would resist ANY move as we do discuss it often but I am hoping we can win him over with the fact that the dog who now lives with his sister could come and live with us!

You'd likely focus on something in the foreground, so you don't really have to look into the light, just have it in frame. Or in this case, you don't even have to have the source in frame, just the items refracting it. ;)
