Hey Lonnie, how are you doing? Getting those plans for the Colorado trip together yet?

I'm finally feeling back to normal. I'd been fighting a bad cold for the past couple weeks.

I haven't even started making those plans yet. I really should get working on that sometime soon!

jbarclay

I feel like I'm up all night here. :) Now I know how Athena and the Right Pondians feel. It is slow here when the US is asleep. It's about 8:30pm here, and I guess the States shoudl be waking up shortly.

Ah, too bad about the cold. I hate summer colds, somehow they seem worse than ones in the winter. Glad to hear your feeling better though.

Yep, better get going on the travel plans. September will be here sooner than you think. Still planning on the early fall time frame?

so I rushed to Walgreens get a bottle and got her some coffee cause caffine helps it. my poor mama...shes fine now.

Still planning on the early fall time frame?

Yep. Sometime in the fall, anyway. I don't want to wait much longer than that. I don't want to have to deal with snow. How soon does it typically start snowing in that part of the world?

jbarclay
29th of July 2007 (Sun), 06:49
In Denver it usually doesn't snow until October or November, but the mountains could get snow in September. September would probably be a good time for travel, but you never know. I like to go to the mountains in the first couple of weeks of September, because that's when the leaves start to turn. I would think that would be perfect timing for Glenwood Springs.

thomascanty
29th of July 2007 (Sun), 06:51
I hadn't even thought about the fall colors. I should try to shoot for that time period.

I hadn't even thought about the fall colors. I should try to shoot for that time period.

The Aspens are gorgeous that time of year, I usually take a weekend or 2 during that time . It does kind of depend on the weather, just when the leaves start to turn. That is the usual time frame though. I would think Glenwood Springs would not start to turn that early, it's not nearly high enough.

So, maybe mid to late September would be a better time?

Lonnie, are you "Still up" or "just getting up"? I know you work nights, but it is early in the morning there, isn't it?

I'm still up. On workdays, I usually don't go to bed until noon. It's 5am here right now. This is the middle of my day.

G'MAE all.

Jack you've had Cat worried about you, she'll be glad you popped in when she signs on. Nice pictures so far from Japan. You're not doing too bad PP on the laptop.

Jamie nice are shots. #3 is my favorite.

Crissa nice puppet show shots. You are too hard on yourself, the audiance picture is also very good. You did a good job on it despite the background, which you can't control.

Dan beautiful blues, nice that you had good weather. A smaller tube of sunscreen should fit in your bag or vest without taking up too much room. Keep one there always, as you just never know...coming from another who has had several spots taken off her back.

Hi Deb, I saw where Miss Mini got herself into some poo. It made me laugh, but I'm sure you failed to see any humor in the situation. I'll bet those people that saw you throw here in the river were a little surprised too. :)

If the weather would cooperate, it would be a lot better. It has rained a lot since I arrived. I have only had a couple of days that it wasn't cloudy. One of the days was when I went to the Temple that I posted the picture of. It is raining again now.

I missed her falling off the deck. Probably scared you more than her.

thomascanty

thomascanty
29th of July 2007 (Sun), 07:53

I believe the only drawback is that you can't focus to infinity, but then that's kind of the whole point of getting tubes, anyway, so it isn't really a drawback.

To bad about the weather maybe the overcast parts would't be bad but rain is crappy .How much longer will ya be their?

I'll only be here a couple more days. Then I'll be back in good 'Ole DRY Colorado. I really do not like all the humidity. I know the rain is making it worse here, but even the couple of days when it wasn't cloudy and overcast it was still so humid. The temps aren't bad(it's in the high 70s and 80'), but the humidity makes it feel like it's really hot.

I might get this sent before I get dropped again. :(

Color stain, semi-transparent in the blue-grey family. To be exact Behr stains Gettysburg for the main color and Wedgewood for the trim.

On August 10th there will be the Starlight Prom, all 4 casts gather for dinner, awards and dancing. Formal attire by most, thus the name Prom.

Total confession time. Not like a Maxy Update, but an honest confession.

I have a 4x4 Jeep Libery. Most of you know this. Most of you also know that I haven't ever done and off-roading.

A few weeks ago, TD and I went out to a small coastal Oregon town called Pacific City. In this city is the only Dory fleet in the US. They launch directly off of the beach and when they're done, they just fly back through the surf and ground themselves onto the beach. It's actually very cool to watch. Because the fishermen launch and retrieve right there on the beach, vehicular traffic is allowed. Actually, TD and I parked right there on the beach in his 4x4 Chevy Tahoe. It was actually kinda surreal for me.

Anyway, Lisa wanted to go and see this Dory fleet, as she did not go with TD and me. So we jumped into the Jeep and took off for Pacific City. We got there just fine and as we dropped down the ramp onto the beach, I reached down and successfully popped the Jeep into 4-hi. It felt a little weird; squirrelly in the sand, but we made it over to where everyone else had parked. No problems.

We wandered about, shooting the scenery and the boats as they made their way in and out of the ocean. About half way into the shoot, I realized that some of these really big 4x4 trucks were laboring to get off of the beach. Just before the ramp that one took to exit the beach, the sand was soft, and by then, quite rutted from frequent passes by all these trucks with their subsequent trailers. A couple of times I watched these huge behemoth trucks with their massive V8 engines and big meaty tires nearly get stuck, digging holes with their tires nearly to the axles.

My Jeep has a 3.7 liter V6. With stock tires.

I began at that point to lose bladder control.

Now, I knew that, technically, the Jeep could handle it. The salesman told me when I bought the Jeep that I could easily scale the vertical sides of boulders the size of Kentucky with my Jeep. TD told me that my Jeep would be fine. Zane on this thread assured me that the Jeep was very capable. The guy on the internet movie that showed the Liberty doing amazing things was convincing. Yet, none of those guys were with me on the sandy beach next to Cape Kiwanda. I had my wife looking at me like, "I'm not pushing."

I did the manly thing and told her the same things the Salesman, TD, Zane and Internet Man told me... we'd be fine. The Jeep could do soft sand of Pacific City not problem... with one arm tied behind its back, blah, blah, blah. All the testosterone, machismo and bluff I could muster.

Inside? a little voice kept saying, "You're a dead man."

The moment of truth came when Lisa said, "Let's go up to Tillamook now." We got into the Jeep, started it up and began to wander over to the ramp. By now I've got enough adrenaline in my system to energize a platoon of Marines.

We went over the big ruts, through the soft sand and right up that ramp like I was taking the exit off of I-5.

The Jeep did a stellar job. Lisa was impressed. I kept my cool. And I did not wet my pants or panic like a third grade girl.

All in all, a good day.

Ok, Pekka has changed the way the referrers here work since it was causing problems for several people, so I'm turning my own hotlink protection back on. Can you guys see this picture ok?

While Lisa and I were driving up the coast yesterday, I saw this really big sign along 101 that said that we were crossing 45º N lattitude. That we were, in fact, half way between the Equator and the North Pole. I thought, "Hey, we're already half way there, why not just go all the way up?"

Lisa wasn't very receptive of the idea.

Well, she's no fun... :(

And your road tires did not dig into the sand like the mud tires on the 'behemoths' but rode over the top of it.

Anyone seen Steve? I know we got word Beth is okay

YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Zanes gettin tubes ....Now we will see horse nostrols and flys ...lol:lol:

I have a 4x4 Jeep Libery. Very cool Puds!! You would be amazed at what that thing will do. The real trick on sand is tire pressure. Even a massive tired 4x4 will go straight to the axles in soft sand if they have full tire pressure. I run 5-8psi on sand. It is amazing the difference in traction it makes.5psi gives you more surface on the sand than 8psi but you risk popping a tire off the bead if you are getting a bit fast and wild. Be gentle on the gas and try not to spin the tires fast. I am happy you got to go off road.

You don't want knobbys for sand it just digs you in. The hard core sand guys run wide non radial highway tires so they can float on the sand.

Sigh... I guess if I want to keep playing here on POTN, I'll just have to keep my hotlink filter turned off. That means I'll be spending a lot more time going over the log files in detail, as if I needed something else to take up my dwindling spare time...

At least I have a Tb/month in bandwidth available. Bandwidth theft shouldn't be a problem for me for a while...

The real trick on sand is tire pressure.

I don't know why, but these two comments made me remember my first foray into Death Valley back in 1991, I think. Or was it 1990? Anyway, I was driving from Reno to Las Vegas and decided to make a detour on the way to visit Scotty's Castle. Just inside the park boundary I passed a big rig, complete with TWO trailers, that had pulled off to the side of the highway for some reason, and buried every damn wheel to the top of the rims in the soft sand.

I wonder how much it cost him to have that pulled back onto the road...

Ok... I'm back on my way to bed. I just knew there was something I was supposed to reply to and had to come back to look...
