Hey, I appreciate your enthusiasm in the 'losers' thread, but it's hard for us older folks to take advice seriously from a skinny teenager who hasn't ever been through what we're going through.
Maybe tone it down just a notch or two, k? Save us our dignity. ;) I mean, when was the last time you had a problem with a glass of wine.

I'm flattered. Tell me your settings and I'll give it a think. Is this the 100mm alone? Did you try with tubes?
Yes, Athena, it was with a full set of tubes on.
http://www.the-aperture.com/EE/photos/normal/IMG_5352.jpg
| camera: Canon 5D (http://www.the-aperture.com/EE/gear.php?camera=1) | lens: Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM (http://www.the-aperture.com/EE/gear.php?lens=19&exhibition=38&u=4847,0) @ 100mm | aperture: f/10 | shutter speed: 1/30s | ISO: 100 | metering: Evaluative
The main problem I had was in the exposure itself. The view looked perfect through the viewfinder, but I had real problems re-creating that view on film (I guess this is the distinction between what the human eye sees and what the camera records). THe sun in this case was almost directly behind my right shoulder. The shot was taken with mirror-slap protection and with the remote cord. The flower that was being refracted was probably 1.5-2 inches below the dewdrops.
I've since learnt from Brian (LordV - macro king) that he uses software to focus stack several images (so each dewdrop is in perfect focus in each exposure, combined, the DOF is controlled).
I also found that when the shot was well, or over-exposed, the drops would appear softer (OOF), but when the shot was underexposed, they were in sharp focus, even when I didn't touch focus at all. This shot was made while I was carefully cupping the end of the lens (like a lens hood would).
I gotta say that I respect your skills so much more now I've found how difficult this is!!
omgosh - this is too funny. (laughing WITH you Pete, not at you) ;)
I find myself laughing at myself as well..!! :D

no, the two of you talking to each other via a message board while in the same house is weird.
I used to do that all the time back in the mid 80's with one of my roommates when I shared a house with a couple other guys. He would be on his computer in the living room while I was on mine in the bedroom, and we'd have a conversation with each other online...

Brian is an absolute WEALTH of information. He is the one that held my hand when I started macro, although he likely does not know it. He produces amazing work and is also amazingly generous with helping beginners. :)
From your above information it seems you are doing all the right things (tripod, mirror lock, remote release...). I was going to ask you were you pulled your focus, but if it was good in one image and bad in another you obviously had it right. How about breeze? Even a slight breeze moving the web would throw focus off with such a shallow dof...
As for the over exposure OOF and the under spot on there is another factor that could be contributing. As I am sure you know from your sharpening skills (you are FAR better read on this subject than I) contrast is a major factor in our "sharpness" perception. You'd be losing contrast in the OE shots.
Brian does use focus stacking in a lot of his images. I must say it's a technique that I really like the effect of, but I have never used it myself. I tried the software about a year ago, got frustrated with it and gave up on it almost immediately. :) I have a lot more patience with a camera than I do with software. ;)

I have a lot more patience with a camera than I do with software.
Welcome to my world. :)
Stitching images, focus stacking, out of bounds, virtual painting, all things I would love to do. I just have not found that big block of time to dedicate to properly learning some of these great processes. Just another good reason to look forward to retirement I guess. ;)

1st of August 2007 (Wed), 08:22
Many thanks for that Athena. As you said, the OW shots did indeed blow out a fair bit, so I guess that was causing the blurring effect (i.e. severe lack of sharpness). There was very little breeze that I could seee (I'm usually quite irritated by any kind of breeze when I'm in macro mode, so I would have noticed!! :D)
I think maybe I'm expecting too much of the equipment (and photography) in this case. Because the viewfinder on the 5D is so lucious, I find myself expecting the camera to capture that view. As I really should know, the camera "sees" in a different way to human sight.
I really need to get that into my head. I'm currently reading a Joe Cornish book (British landscaper) on that very subject in the vain hope that some of it will sink in.

Yeah, what Athena said.
My viewpoint is that I'd much rather do everything I can in-camera. I'm really bad at post-processing, so all I really do is a bit of levels, a bit of curves (if I can't do what I want with levels) and a bit of sharpening.

Gee Lonnie, sorry about your Tupper problem. I had a cat that started doing that after a move (and the addition of cats). I kept her in the basement for a year, where she did OK, but whenever I let her out she reverted back to spraying the walls. I finally gave her away to some nice country folk that could keep her outside. She had been checked out by the vet and had no physical problems that we could find.
Gotta run.

If the sun is still strong, it is a good idea. The bracket might be a good idea too, it never hurts.
If it was a bit further into the evening, and the light was more muted, you can get some of the best even lighting available.
One other option I like to do if possible, is to shoot in the shade to eliminate those hard sun shadows. You do have to make sure that there are no sunny spots showing, as these spots tend to get blown out.

It will take me less time to read the Harry Potter book, but this thread would be more entertaining. A dilemma that I shall address in the morning.
On another note. I have just been doing some maintenance on my website and am left wondering. I have 1984 photos online in 101 public galleries. There have been 270100 photo pages viewed to date, however there are only 3 viewer comments and only one person has signed the guest-book. Have any of you got a similar ratio on your sites and if not any tips on encouraging some "user participation" will be greatly appreciated. Hey Neil
(As long as those tips do not include "Put more other side of the rocks pictures in the public galleries" :-) )
Now who would ever make such a request? ;)
The only comments I get are from people helping me identify someone in the photo, or if it is one they like because they are either it themselves or it has meaning to them. I think you need to say somewhere that visitors see, that viewer participation and comments are desired.

aww poop, Crissa! If your weather is like our weather, then I would not have showed up either! But I would have let you know ahead of time.
Our biggest hospital nearby has a family park and tomorrow they are having a family evening with giant slides, moonbounces, face painting, clowns, balloons, visit by a helicopter (emergencies permitting), a band, free ice cream, and K-9 dogs! But I think it is just too hot to go. Its from 5 to 7:30 and that is like the hottest part of the day now. I wanted to take Allie because she just loves this sort of stuff, and I'd probably get a few nice snaps in, but I'm afraid my head will explode in the heat. If you figure that one out, let me know! Since April 22, my hike galleries have had 239,166 views with only 2 comments and no guest book entries. My travel galleries have a better ratio with 9 comments over 24,032 photo views, but still no guest book entries, since December 11. Funny how the hike galleries seem to be so much more popular, but none of that crowd seems to be willing to type a line or two in a comment. Both of my hike comments were from the same person, on the same day.
