Hi Jo, you home or still traveling?
Still travelling. Still in Austria, Kenya in August, back home for school beginging of September
Hello everyone. I’m Stefan (aka Fi20100) and I’m a POTNholic. I’ve never posted in this thread before, but I’ve heard you’re all a bunch of nice and friendly people. I will not be able to read through your humble thread from the start, so I’ll try to start from here
Hello Finland...

IT'S HERE
And I'm stuck at work
You have to work? ;)
I explained it here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3575361&postcount=431). Sorry to hear about your hamster.
Yes, Mammoths demise was taken hard - but he is in hamster heaven :)
*sigh* time to get back to work *sigh*
You work too??? What is this? a trend? - a disease?

This is probably a stupid question, but wouldn't a $30 tripod from Wal-Mart work in a pinch? So long as it safely holds the camera steady, what more do you need in the short-term?
Here is one for $18.88. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5030909
I am not sure I'd trust that to not fall over and destroy my camera... I read through it, but don't see where it says it's weight limit.

Not to mention I'm a photo junkie and need my fix ..
Miss Mini has nothing to report thus far today shes been peaceful and calm
This is a shot of the Tappen Zee from yesterday morning .
Have a good trip, Deb! Love the shot of the TZ.
That's interesting. I can't get the hang of using a tripod or a monopod. Sorry you miss your stuff. Maybe you can make beanbags work for ya?
I'm addicted to tripods nowadays. The shots I get from using them are so much better than the handheld ones, and I don't shake that much. Not only that, but there's so much more you can while using a 'pod.
This is probably a stupid question, but wouldn't a $30 tripod from Wal-Mart work in a pinch? So long as it safely holds the camera steady, what more do you need in the short-term?
Um.... wouldn't that require a trip to Sprawl-Mart? That's not going to happen any time soon....
I've got a question I'm not sure that there's an answer to...but if there IS an answer, some one in here will know it.
I have family portraits to shoot this evening. Outdoors.
We've got a massive fire broiling on one of our mountains here that has filled our entire city with thick icky smoke.
Everything is brown and hazy.
Is there ANYTHING I can do when taking these photos tonight to help with that haziness? We can't reschedule the shoot.
Go Sepia. Or rent huge fans to blow away the smoke. Or, .... well, that's where my brain gets a little funky, so I'll spare you that.
I should have mentioned before, I already considered this possibility. I've always kept a pretty close eye on the male cats I've had for the past two or three decades because of this potential problem.
Once a male cat "hits" an area, the scent of that will draw him indefinitely. The object is to alter, or destroy that smell. Someone on here suggested vinegar (go with the "white" or clear), and that's probably the best way to do it. Vinegar will break down the stubborn scent and will keep from drawing Tupper back.
Methinks you're liking that one, eh?
Yeah, kinda. :)
How'd you get that? lol
Apparently, the Title Faerie thought I was being a bit mean to poor little TD. Yeah, whatever.

btw Jamie, if you shoot in jpeg, I think I downloaded some picture styles from canon. (they would be in the user defined section where the neutral, standard, faithful & etc and under the user defined 1-3 ones...I'm pretty sure I did but) if I didn't, sometimes they can be really fun effects and you can download them here: http://web.canon.jp/imaging/picturestyle/shooting/file/index.html
if I did put some on there, it would be the clear, the twighlight and the emerald.

I used to think the 30D's shutter sound was obscenely noisy...until I got the MKIII, it's really the noisiest camera ever "clack clack clack" terrible (thankfully there's a silent mode).

That was one of the many things that really made the decision to go with the 30D so much easier.... I loved my Xt; but in so many ways, it was limiting in what it could do. I'm not much of a "Bigger Gear = Better Pictures" kind of guy, but the 30D really made shooting easier and really opened up more possibilities photographically.

It was a tough one. In fact, the vet asked if we wanted to put hom down, but we decided against it, and asked if we could bring him home, so he could die at home with us. :( When we brought him home, we made him a nice little room of his own in the bathroom, with plenty of towels and blankets. (He was constantly leaking/dripping, and the vet had removed the catheter)
I sat in there with him for hours.
Then... he just started getting better. He used the litter box that I had put in there, and he started eating. (he hadn't eaten in days, he had an IV at the vets)
I really think it was a miracle. No way he should have come through that.
Lonnie, don't get too freaked... Jeffrey had more than just the bladder infection, his had progressed to worse things (I don't remember the medical details though).
Anyway, that was over 5 years ago, and you'd never know that the old guy was ever sick at all. ;) He's a trooper.
Awww, I just loved that story! I'm so glad it had a happy ending and he's still doing fine!

Same with the upgrade from the Rebel (300D) to the the 30D. After shooting one event with Curt's 20D I was frustrated with the Rebel. Then he was a sweetie and surprised me with a 30D via my SIL when she and I went to Florida last October.

Yes it was, consider too, the DRebel came from him to me for my 50th birthday...course the standing joke on that...it worked out well for him.
The first 9 months he used more than I could, then he got the 20D. No kidding, we would be out him with the digital and me with the film. I would ask to use the digital, he said sure, it is your camera, then sit there like a lost puppy, wringing his hands, shifting weight from one foot to the other, until I gave it back. Geez.
When he got an inheritance, I told him...BUY THE 20D!!!! After that, I got to finally learn how to use the DRebel.

After cooling down for a few minutes I opted to get the training done and over with...needless to say...no pictures over lunch hour. Could take a late lunch but I want to get some other projects out of the way.
And so, I bid a found farewell until I decide to pop in again.

That was a thought/concern of mine too, but unless I am actually going to ship it with gear in it, I don't think it will be a problem. The roughest it will likely be treated is bouncing around in the back of a vehicle, so it should not be a worry. I have considered building it out with a bit of solid foam in behind, but I don't think that will be necessary.

Question for all you wise folks out there.
What focal length is best for taking multiple photos to later stitch together? i realize I want to be in manual mode and keep the exposure constant in all the shot, but would imagine a longer focal length would cause less distortion and stitch together better. Too long of a focal length and I would need to take a gazillion shots to get a panorama.

I think distortion is the biggest problem. Using a lens / FL with very little distortion will give you the best result.
