Situation 1: 1 hour before sunset outside with a Canon XTI + nifty fifty + 430ex with the sunset behind me.

Obviously I need to point the flash directly at the people and I need to soften the shadows.

The other shots will be inside and I figure that I can use a bounce card for that.

No diffuser required for outdoor fill.
But if it's 1 hour before sunset, I would recommend a 1/2 CTO gel on the flash to match the color temp of the ambient.
