When extracting people from backgrounds, what do you set the feather to, I am a little confused how this works, I want it to blend into the background so do I want a very small feather or large one. Thanks

i believe it has to do with the smoothness (or lack of) - of the edge
that is - for hair you need something that will cover the edges sticking up and for smooth edges use something finer
here is a work in progress that i need to redo when i have some time
for the hair on the back of neck and goatee(pun) i used a big size for the horns a small one
the sky coming thru the goatee needs redone but you'll get the idea

To see what feather does, make a pic with a black>white gradient fill. Click in it with the Magic Wand & see the result. Change the Tolerance to another # & try it again.
Undo.
Now, use a marquee tool to select an area, copy & paste it into a new file.

A lot depends on what you are extracting and the colour difference between the image and its background. What you are trying to get rid of is any halo around the extraction. Extensis Mask Pro has a really handy chisel tool that just cuts off a pixel or two at a time. Takes some getting used to but to my mind it is the best extraction tool out there and available on 30 day trial.

I get good results from Knockout. I have Mask Pro but haven't tried it.

Pretty much the same way you select an area with photoshop. I find That with Corel Knockout, it gives better results at isolating hair and shadows. The program does have a tutorial with it.
