Bert Jansch, in a just world, would have far more fame and $ than, say, eric clapton. the man is a GIANT of acoustic guitar, having played in the formidable UK folk group Pentangle, and then also on his own. technically flawless, w/ a keen observer's eye, he takes the best traits of blues and folk and melds them into a personal vision. he recently recorded _The Black Swan_ last year and played some rare US dates in support of it. opener PG Six (ex-Tower Recordings) was roped in as well. great night in a lovely setting.

#1 Pity there is so much dead space without interesting background.

#2 A bit dark and bad cut on the guitar. Facial expression looks a bit "pained."

#3 A rather odd moment to shoot.

#4 Again the dead space just doesn't seem to fit although I love the contrasty lighting with the light reflecting back off the floor to fill shadows.

#5 I'd consider cropping off the lower left (actually, I rarely crop anymore ... it's all part of the show, but I think the guitar detail is distracting.)

#6 Odd expression ... wish his face wasn't tilted down so far.

#7 I'd like a closer crop and a little sharper.

#8 Perfect!

You get the most interesting guys to shoot. And even if I got 'em I wouldn't know who they were. I'm glad you're willing to go shoot these events and help musical cripples like me expand our horizons. :-)

ahh, Bert Jansch...isn't he the guy (one of many other artists) that Led Zeppelin completely ripped a song from?

#1: Nice expression, but I think I'd crop closer or portrait, because of the BG. (Why doesn't the curtain reach the floor? )
#2: Good expression, bit central & the guitar mic is bugging me. Crop candidate.
#3: Not a good expression. Nice crop though ;)
#4: Nice. Maybe crop a bit bottom and right?
#5: Very nice, but I think I agree with Dwight.
#6: Rim of the glasses hide the eyes in a not-so-nice way.
#7: OoF? Also crop a bit tighter.

#8 Perfect!

#8? What number 8 ???

#4 and 5 are best IMO.

yep, 'black water side'. he played that one.

#4 and 5 are best IMO.

#1 i liked the space, but probably should have darkened it a bit more.
#2 could use a bit more white to the B&W, agreed. that 'pained' look was pretty much his standard look. maybe he had some bad sushi before the gig.
#3 was between songs, as he was telling a tale.
#4 i had to sneak out of my theater-style seat in the front and surreptiously shoot a few from the side. the performance space is rather formal, and i really wanted to minimize my movement and any possible distraction. agreed that i could tighten that image a bit
#5 i could burn out that guitar case. cropping wouldn't work imo.
#6 was all i had to work with. he did make a funny arched eyebrows moment, and i caught it, but again being in a fixed seat, i couldn't change my perspective at all, and was actually fortunate to catch the moment. agreed that having his face tilted a bit higher would work better, but what can you do.
#7 i agree, i think it may be OOF a bit.
#8 dwight being cheeky :p

Bert's just died...sad news.

Glad to have seen him two other times, once opening for Neil Young (didn't get to shoot him), and last December at Johnny D's (Neil's wife Pegi opened that show...i was waiting for Neil to clamber out of the bus parked outside the club but that never happened). Bert, you will be missed.
