Has anyone tried the new firmware update yet.

Hope he get AI-servo eventually working.

Apparently they only added a selectable MLU delay in CF17. AI-Servo still is crippled. I think I'll skip this one :)

Ok, I didn't skip it :)
Almost no added functions (except the MLU selectable delay, which I actually had left at the default value of 1,5 sec) but some niceties. Useless right arrow button selection is removed, and now during FEC and AF mode selection, more "human" codes are displayed.
During FEC, "FEC1" legend is displayed in both back LCD and in the viewfinder, and during AF selection, AF OS (One Shot), AF SE (AI Servo) or AF AI (AI Focus) are showed instead of PA-1, 2 and 3

thanks for the news, I installed it too. It looks nicer than the previous version. in addition to all other changes, it seems that they fixed MLU/self-timer issues.

No problem with whit balance here
and ISO 3200 (H) is ok.
What do you mean by "flashing eyeball" ?

I just don't know how to change the MLU delay

Well done Guillermo Freige, I was trying to figure out the Focus settings.

All working as advertised - except the white balance which sems disabled. Fortunately, I use RAW.

We really should organise a Waisa champagne party, for a few bucks each from everyone using his hack, he could be entertained in Buckingham Palace.

What a genius!! :D :D

I think that you've installed the wrong (first) version of the hack.

I even did it without a fully charged battery! it only took a few minutes.

msvadi yeah how do i get the most recent installed
i downloaded it last night at work and it didn't see it on the card

I just followed the link from the first post. Make sure you get E3kr111B71.rar and NOT the old version, E3kr111M.rar. Decompress it with winrar, copy *.fir file to the CF.

HI I was just wondering if there is any way to revert the camera to it's original firmware, And if so how can I get my hands on the original firmware to load it in.

Thanks

yes, you can always go back. this site has a link to version 1.1.1 update (Canon's firmware) and instructions on how to install it:

http://www.bahneman.com/liem/photos/tricks/digital-rebel-tricks.html

or go directly to:

http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/eosdigital/E3kr_firmware-e.html

I saved a copy of 1.1.1 on my computer, just in case I'll need.

I don´t see any trouble with WB. I've changed it a lot of times today using B7.1...
Regarding MLU delay, you change it using CF17, and yes, the MLU/Timer issue is resolved too.
There is a nice side effect of the right button disabling, regarding the modified behaviour of the delete button. Now if you press it by mistake (as I did a lot of times, because I'm used to change to the "OK" setting that way to delete the last picture) nothing happens and the picture is actually deleted (as intended) when you press "Set". Previous B7 hack had a nonfunctional AE selector there, so the mistake forced me to switch to play mode to delete the picture. Nice touch :)

Strange...with CF17 I have "Commutateur arrêt objectif AF" with these different possibilities :

0: Arret AF
1: Activation AF
2: Mémo. expo. durant mesure
3. Point AF: M->Auto/Auto->Ctr
4: ONE SHOT <-> AI SERVO
5: Activation Stab. Im. (IS)

(sorry it's in french)

Hmmm... may be I should reinstall the firmware ???

This is the original meaning of CF17. Probably wasia didn't modify all languages. I'm using English and the times for each values are:
0: 1,5 sec
1: 3 sec
2: 4,5 sec
3: 6 sec
4: 7,5 sec
5: 10 sec

Of course you can´t change to english while using the hacked firmware, but I think MLU delay selection will work too in french, despite the lack of text modifications.

what are the best settings?

billhercus
18th of June 2004 (Fri), 03:26
It is 7.1 I have and, as well as no AWB, I have noticed that the drive mode selection only toggles between continuous and self timer.

I shall go back to previous hack - this one has problems, I fear.

c0ntr0lz
18th of June 2004 (Fri), 03:47
found a prob with the hack
when you take a pic and then hit trash when looking at it, it goes straight to OK and won't let you hit the left button cause that sets the AF

Following problems with 7.1 beta, I attempted to return to previous hack (after resetting all parameters) and it would not operate. However, I have now just loaded the Canon firmware no problem.

I will now reload the old hack as I really appreciated it. Shan't try beta again - gave me a few anxious moments!!

Further to my last. On return to original Canon Firmware, I have lost selection of white balance other than Auto and in Portrait mode only, the drive will not operate in normal single shot mode. No other obvious problems but it does make one pause and reflect on the use of this hack which, I have to admit, I loved, but now I'm not so sure ...

Fortunately, I shoot RAW

Before returning to the original canon firmware, reset all the Custom Function values to the original 300D settings. Note, you cannot use the Reset option in the menu, it does not affect these values. Below is a list of default binary values from left to right
(the bottom numbers in the CF menu):
0,0,0,0,0,1,0,11,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0

Thanks Guillermo, you are right. It's just a translation problem. It works.
But I'm wondering what is the usefulness of changing this delay ? Is it just to simulate a customizable timer ? or is there any other advantage ?

billhercus

Yes, I did the reset in exactly that way - I wouldn't have tried any hack unless I new there was a way back!!

Now hesitating whether or not to put the previous hack back - it is a very fine enhancement to the 300D'd capabitlities ....

:?: Dose anyone know what the arrows after option 3 & 4 mean?

I have

3: 6 sec -> -> (arrows are on same line facing same direction)
4: 7.5 Sec <-/-> (arrows are on top of one another facing opposite)

thanks

That's answered in another forum. They have no significance - it is all to do with the computer code manipulation and is therefore way above my head.

Bill:
Just took away both batteries and wait a minute, and reinsert them. The camera will revert to factory default (including file numbering, so you need to upload your last picture to the camera again to recover the numbering)

I have downloaded the hack file and am having trouple unpacking it on macOSX. the error I get on sreen is:

An error has occurred while expanding the file "E3kr111b71.rar" (format error).

Error #17540

Any suggestions?

May be the rar format is not recognized by the mac ???

The rar format is recognized by the mac. You need to get the right unpacker just like windows. You can search for them on the internet. The one I use is unrarx

Happy unraring

Thanks alsmith,

I downloaded for future reference. I ended up soing some workarounds back and forth between mac and pc to get the hack loaded. but, finally got it squared away. I'm totally stoked on the new hack. Great functionality.

I just checked these observations on my unhacked Rebel... The problems you noticed are actually default settings. You cannot set white balance in the automatic modes, nor can you set the camera to single shot mode.

No worries Bill, your camera appears fine.

billhercus

What a gent!! You are absolutel right - in RAW there is no point in having white balance adjustment. Panic over. Should have known of course

Now back to the previous hack, I think, or will I ? Maybe not ...why not?

Guillermo Freige
21st of June 2004 (Mon), 11:33
People, can you all read the manual before panicking?? :)
Let´s check some basic facts:

In Scene or Auto modes, you have no WB, RAW mode, flash selection (is automatic), Custom Functions (despite the latests hacks actually shows the menu, but you can't change anything), exp. compensation or any adjustment except image size and compression. Also AF mode is wired to the mode (as AI Servo to Sports mode).
In Creative modes (P, Tv, Av, M or A-Dep) you have all the standard controls, plus the hacked ones, so please only panic if something is missing here !!! :)

Well done Guillermo, little reminders of what is what are more than a little useful. I'm now back to where I was before the 7.1 beta hack and very happy. However, I shall not move forward till I get some pretty solid evidence that the next hack is OK.

For the nervous it is true that with a little care you can always recover back to Canon. :D :D

I've had my Rebel since January, and I've held off installing the hack for quite a while now.
However, about a week ago I finally did and....

I LOVE IT!

I especially love the FEC and ability to chose AF mode.
I used to miss many shots waiting for AI Servo to kick in (if it ever did), now I can select it manually! It's awesome.

Guillermo Freige

I'm using the 7 and 7.1 hacks since their incarnation, without any problems.
There are some reports the "battery low" indicator shows sooner than before, but because a incorrect detection and not because of an increased battery usage, so the number of pictures per charge remains the same. I'd not used the camera so much to detect if this is true, and as I never drained a battery during even a heavy day, I can´t check if battery life has changed. Anyone using 7.1 has detected some of this?

I finally installed the hack on my Drebel. Went smooth as any other FW install. I haven't played with this camera much at all since I got it. Nice to have all those other features. Hope they get AI Servo working. I live for AI Servo.
