Those lenses are "poop" :(

Keep in mind that I am a complete beginner... Thanks for the feedback, though. I assumed that they weren't great lenses. The appeal with that package (particularly the second one) is that I can be up and shooting with a few lens options immediately - for relatively low costs. I'm thinking they could be great learning tools.

... well on the other hand. I do know of someone who has been getting consistently good results with one of Sigma's "cheap" 300mm zooms...

Yeah.. given your thoughts on it.. (getting up and running) I'd go for it. I can't comment on value/pricing etc.. though as it is foreign currency.

I had a "cheap Sigma" as my first lens.. and I don't regret it.. when I was ready to move on,. I did.

Absolutally. You can allways sell the lenses on EPAY later for not much loss :D
Mmm-had a look again at the deal. several things;
Those cheap sigma lens models really are not very good....
And
**** me that guy is one mixed up idiot :x !!
On the one page he says there is an aus 3 year warantee, further down he says 1 yr australian(international) warantee, also '1 year canada/usa warantee' & down the bottom says 1 year mack international warantee.

Note that the postage fee is $125+ 25 insure(and don't even think about not having insurance)
PLUS there will be GST (they are the import duties he talks about-that he illegally tries to have you avoid)
Basically there is little chance customs will believe it is a gift (but hey it does work sometimes)Figure on paying an additional au$170 for gst .(1549+150post x 1.1)
I'm pretty sure this guy isn't a scammer ,and you will get all you paid for,but damn it's abit dodgey in some ways.
By the way-do you know if you are getting a 300D or a rebel????
It says both on that page!
This seller is just not worth the grief!!!!!!

The second seller (pro kit) is much better
The only mention of warrantee is the 5 year mack thing.honest at least. Not sure how mack warrantees work in oz tho....
The pro kit does have slightly better lenses. the kit lens is ok,the 28-90II is as bad as the sigmas in the other auction and the 75-300 is actually quite a usable lens..not great by any means but you'll get some very nice pics with it and may want to keep it for a long time.
He says two different things about postal insurance-either $22 or $49 depending which part you read....
It says 10% GST payable,so the total will be;
2150+46x1.1=$2415
Or 2150+73x1.1=$2445

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm thinking I may be better to visit my local camera store and see if they can't put a similar package together at a reasonable price.

Zeke,

The prices look OK but the when you add postage and the possibility of having to pay import duty (if it's imported from o/s) it soon adds up.

I had a good experience buying from a Hong Kong based ebay seller when i bought my sigma 12-24 (and he wrote value of US$80 on the box so customs didn't say a thing!)...but when i bought my 10D i went for the security of a local seller.

www.dirtcheapcameras.com.au gave me a reasonable deal and were quite helpfull too.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Also there is ozdig
http://www.ozdig.com/CamerasDigitalSLR.html
but they don't have alot of range and prices are good and not so good.
Dirtcheap is a great reliable place to buy .i havent tried center.net.au yet
but they look good and i'm keen to!
I have noticed allready certain items that are cheaper there than bargainbasement import sellers on ebay

i bought my 10d from centre.net about 8 months ago and had no dramas whatsoever. i think most of their stuff is 'grey market' and warranties are not proper canon ones. however they do offer comprehensive warranties and communicated really well with me. i went there after dirtcheapcameras charged my credit card before they even bothered to mention that the lens was out of stock. living in tassie means the local camera store isn't really an option at all so i've got used to the mail order stuff
nice to know there are some aussies here as well
cheers

Zeke,

for lenses, you might try used ones on eBay.

While the good canon lenses (the L line, but also cheaper popluar lenses like the 28-135 IS, 75-300IS) hold their value very well, the 'consumer' Canon lenses might be pretty cheap to have from film users selling off their old gear.

I've heard good things about the Canon EF 3.5-4.5 28-105mm USM II (Careful! Don't confuse it with the Canon EF 4-5.6 28-105mm USM!) and seen it offered for considerably little money.

The 28-135 IS has even better reviews, but is much sought after, so used ones are not that cheap.
In comparison to these lenses, the 28-90 can certainly be characterized with CDS' highly technical term

Look at www.photozone.de for lens comparisons!

Best regards,
Andy
