Since there really isn't any rule about what a good histogram should look like, I studied them a lot when my digital camera was new. I just wanted to get to the point where I could recognize what was bad, e.g. a huge spike at the left or right margin. However, there are many variations on peaks scattered though the middle of the histogram that will all make for good photos.

If you get histograms that are just too weird, then you will have to treat the images with levels changes or equalization changes. If you can do that just a little and get good results, then you are OK, but if you have to make massive changes, you will conclude that you should have done it differently initially when you shot it.

A good histogram should have low shoulders (very little or no data) at each end of the spectrum. If your historgram shows lots of data at either end of the spectrum right up to the edge, you likely have lost data, and should modify the exposure to pull back the lost data into the histogram range.
