In terms of rainfall, the Atacoma Desert is one of the driest places on earth. Some years have no measurable rain at all. And yet nearly every night a dense bank of Pacific fog rolls over the coast up to the foothills of the Andes. Though its tough to leverage a foothold, some cacti, including the Eriosyce family, have carved niches into this harsh and foreboding area.

Originally classified in as Neoportaria, many of these cacti have dark purple green bodies. Balancing the exposure of the dark body/white flower combination has been simplified by digital histograms and the flashing hotspot indicator.

Hope you enjoy image stacks from some of the cacti I grow. Unfortunately, I lost my magnification info on the close-up, but I estimate that the flower is about an inch wide.

Hiya Irwin,

Excellent shots, #2 is beautifully set against that black BG, & #1 looks just yummy.

Don't know if this sit will be of any interest to you Irwin ??

Beautiful shots. I agree with Mark about #2, the dark background really shows this off.

Hi Irwin, I have to agree #2 is a beauty. You did good hold the white in such a dark background.

I'm not really one for cacti but there's no denying the quality of your shots and your knowledge of your subject, Irwin. As for the Atacama, please send a few weeks of that climate to the UK!

Thank you Linda, Bill, Alby and Eccles. I love the drama of a white flower with a dark background, provided you soften light enough to get good tonalities in the whites.

Hi Irwin, I have to agree #2 is a beauty. You did good hold the white in such a dark background.. One of the reasons that I like available light photography is that you can see the flow of the light. With white flowers, I think pretty light is essential.
