How many of you would buy such a product?

it will press shutter from a remote up to 1000 meters away and still go through walls.

Would depend on how well it actually worked, the functions of it, build quality etc.

Doesn't IR require a line of sight, a clear line of sight?

Last time I checked, light does not travel through solid objects.

Doesn't say anything about IR... ;)

People, people!
Nightscape never mentioned IR!

There are some cheap radio devices available that work, but with limited range.
Of course PocketWizards can be used, but they cost a lot more than $50.

I want one that emulates both half-press and full-press of the shutter button like this one (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=272211). If it can do that, with the range you specified, you'll have my $50. :D

its obviously not IR because he said it goes through walls #1 and #2 it would work upto 1000 feet, IR wont do either

I would be in for that

1000 meters? Heck yeah! Through walls? Maybe I can finally catch the creeps who keep stealing one sock out of my dryer.

You didn't have to make it public, Luc.

The Cops are here, I just gave it to them.

I feel bad about the restraining order. Was I that overbearing?...

Sorry...

Are you insinuating that I, a 30 year old woman, stuffs my bra?

Excuse me while I go cry.

Now about the OP (writing this from blackberry, luckily I am not handcuffed, yet ;) :p), I think the idea is great. You seemed to have an idea before posting the thread. Some things came to mind:

- FCC Regulations (I know, they're a pain in the butt, but gotta be compliant)
- Power requirements (In order to generate an unique radio signal that strong, you would probably need some significant amount of power). Also, for the receiver, you would need the same (bah, maybe less).

Hey, I am just tinkering with the idea. If you have a breakthrough, don't hold out. At 1000 mts away I would not even know what I was shooting, but 100 mts would be ideal. Specially for remote cameras, say on a Basketball hoop, and so forth.

PocketWizard managed a few really smart solutions, but they want all your money for it.

$50?... I am game.

It's a known, and scientifically proven, fact that dryers have a tendency to snack on one sock of a pair. It's still a mystery why they only take one instead of both, but that's still being researched. Just thought I'd mention it so that you don't go off on a wild goose chase. :p

With a sensitive receiver, the transmitter doesn't need so much power. If I remember correctly, the power output was 10 mW for a little radio transmitted that was developed at a previous job. It transmited a couple of long code sequences about 300m and managed to run for a couple of years on a small button cell with a couple of thousand activations.

I'll try those if they work with 1D decently. I Can attach a remote 30D as well, that would totally rock.

yep i would buy one
it would work great for rolling rig type shots at a reasonable speed
i was going to try building one using remote control gear from a RC car, one control to run the zoom, and one to press the button

Obviously an RF solution.. there are several out there already. The problem is the really good ones are VERY expensive and the really cheap ones are VERY cheesy... its time for a middle ground solution... $50 works right for me

It sure is a cheapie. In fact, I have one of those, bought it thru e-bay. It works ok... most of the time. But it is NOT reliable. Sometimes it just refuses to work at all, other times its great.

ZapShot makes one for the 300D-350D-400D at $100 or a bit more for the deluxe model that is built like a tank, and works great, even tho just a bit overpriced for what it is. (I used to own one when I had my 350) Too bad they don't make one for the 5D or I would own it.
