Really like # 2, John. Nice. # 6 looks like a tighter crop and work on the hot blue patches would make it shine.

Thanks for the feedback ski...
I really like the blue cast in two... Looks mystical... however, If I knew how to compensate for the patches I would Ski...
They are totally blown out...
Here is another pic I really like...;)

I have been having good luck with Lightroom's individual color saturation tools recently in those situations. I have also read that saturation masks can work wonders, but haven't mastered that yet.

Sounds like a plan Ski... I'll look around the tutorials and the links Rene' posts for the blown channels repair tools...
But for now, I'm quite amused at the translucent purple psychedelic neon light effect...
I'm being optimistic though, regarding the recovery of any skin tones from the center most portion of the purple sheen... There was no foundation of pigment available to restore...
Rebuilding same with clone tools, is an option but not without a lot of spare time...
I'd like to look into Lightroom, cause I hear it packs an entire conglomeration of tools, more easily accessible than Photoshop...

I like #2, 5 and 6.
Better (more exiting) lighting then you usually get, or so it seems.
On the blown blues: Try a higher color temperature in PS (4000 to 5000K), pull back exposure -1,7 EC (that's about as far as it'll go), and in the calibrate tab, pull back blue saturation and/or hue. (Never mind the rest of the image; just watch the highlights, and optimise for them)
Overlay that conversion on the original, and mask as needed.
(The blue channel might be a good starting point for the mask, then use levels on the mask, then blur it a bit.)

NICE, John!
I'm hoping to shoot these guys next month when they play one of the casinos here. May be out of the country on business, though, so it's up in the air.
Damn nice work. #2 is killer...

Hi Rene'... Thanks for the technical quidelines... I just got done with an "overnighter" post processing last night's show... Will gradually work with your recommended guidelines to improve that "Heavenly Light" photo...;)

John,
These are some very good shots... your work is making great improvements.
Thanks for the feedback Chris... I'm starting to use the "L" glass more often... And the 85mm is a pretty good "back up" lens too...
Still following your suggested sequences and options in Post Processing... They work every time...
The POTN book will be out soon... I notice that you are featured in several sections, Congrats. on your success...

Hi Kevin, Thanks for the feedback...
I use spot metering and Auto Focusing... There is very little time if any for manual focusing during active shows... I'm in AV mode and adjust the aperture on the fly as lighting permits.
The 85mm is usually pretty fast focusing... Except for last night, where the entertainer kept running back and forth from me...The only problem I have with it, is containing the entire guitar in vertical or even in horizontal... And sometimes, foot pedaling back is not always an option. :D

Thanks for the positive feedback Steve. I can share some strategies regarding the shoot... Keep us posted when you know for certain, and I'll PM you with insider info... (I'll need to know where you'll be shooting from in the venue ...)
Met up with their East Coast "super fans" and two "major contributors" to their web and fan club... They traveled from Massachusetts (6 hours) to see 8 consecutive shows in our area... I'm waiting for them to get back home for feedback...
And thanks for the vote on # 2... Now I'll be more confident about forwarding it to some local contacts.
The Super Fans are:
"La Onda, Los Lonely Boys Street Team. We are committed to going to as many shows as possible and telling the world about Los Lonely Boys. We promote them out of our own pockets for the sheer love of the music. It is a magnificent obsession."

Thank you for the info, i will have to experament a bit with the different modes and such... i usually use AF and the "P" setting... most of the time i get good exposures... the odd one is a bit 'milky'... i guess i am doing a fiar bit correctly... kk

Well just so you know, I actually voted for all of them, not knowing it was by you... The 2007 POTN book is almost ready for sale, another week or two and we'll all be able to order some... Looking forward to it...

Thanks Dwight... I did take a lot of pictures to get these results... And it was real tough getting the entire guitar into the frame with the prime 85mm lens.
I left the pit to get full stage shots and had problems getting back in...

Often, as the stage lights change intensity and colors, the results vary... Including sharpness, contrast, shadows, etc.... not to mention shutter speed, ISO and aperture, need to be adjusted accordingly.
And he plays the bejeesus out of it...

Thanks thelightofsound for the feedback... There isn't much I can do about the blues... I'm convinced that Henry knew the blue light was right there when he stepped into it...
So for now, it will have to suffice as that imaginary mystical glow from Heaven...;)

Not much wrong with the blues in #6, except for the Raw converter (LR or ACR?) ;)

Awesome set.
I like the second stage shot much better than the first.
The first just seems a bit odd to me, maybe the crop...

Thanks for the feedback Shooter-boy...
The 85mm prime lens wouldn't allow me to frame the entire stage setting, without going way out of the pit to the back of the venue... Eventually I did for the last shot and lost my spot up front...
I did wonder if anyone would comment on it... It does look incomplete without that big logo graphic...

It's almost 8AM here, on the east coast.
Rene', I'll try converting it from RAW with the Canon DPP...Maybe it will make a difference...
But right now, I've got to step out for a few hours...
Later,

Glad you like this set Gary.
The show is packed with excitement... But it was tough to capture well framed shots, with the 85mm prime lens...
We (the early arrivals to the show) were all in the very front row of the pit... Since I was the tallest of the bunch, I stayed behind one of the front floor speakers, and on my toes shooting over the speaker, much of the time...
Later, I left the pit too soon to shoot full stage shots from the rear of the venue... and missed a lot of close up stage action toward the end. I had to shoot over every one in the pit to get the last of the action...
Truthfully, I think they might have played a song someone else wrote, but didn't notice it... Was too busy taking pictures to notice... Their fan base is great...;)
