Tried the bigma at the shop today. Was a bit surprised that it's not as big or heavy as people make you believe. What i'd like to know is how is it compared to canon's 100-400 L in terms of size and weight, as i was originally planning to get the 100-400 L (no shop here carry canon's).

What's a bigma?

I assume it's a Sigma lens of some sort, but don't know which one.

my guess would be the monster 50-500.

It's the sigma 50-500. You can see it here:

lol... may not be heavy at first carry, but tell me how your arms feel after an hour or two of holding that monster! :)

Great lens!

That might be true but when you hear people talking about it you have the impression that you are carrying a spare tire or something. Guess it's a matter of expectations.

Its weight is not an issue for me as I won't be carrying it around, more like in a fixed place here or there and on a tripod.

I started my telephoto life with a Bigma 50-500mm...

It is a damn fine lens and value :)

I NEVER hand held it for more than a few shots at a time.. it was the lens I learned to use a Monopod on

I sold it when I got a 500mm Prime.. figured I'd never use the zoom again.. and was correct where the Bigma is concerned.. it was so heavy,. I might just as well suck it up ad carry the even heavier prime,. right?

Well,. I recently got the Canon 100-400mm IS...

It is SOOOOOO Much lighter it is not even funny. I will use it in conditions that I would never have used 50-500mm. Very lightweight and portable.

CDS, that sounds like the confession from a twelve-step program.

"I am a recovering Bigma shooter!"

According to our resident expert, it's the 100-400 L It is SOOOOOO Much lighter it is not even funny.

You can't argue with that i guess. That's my 1st choice too. However, the local dealer doesn't have it, and even if he did he would sell it for MAJOR sum. At the same time i'm kind of reluctant to order & have such a lens shipped overseas, worried that it might be damaged during shipment. I know there is insurance, I'm working on it.

that i posted this question in "Talk about photography" http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=35188

which is basicaly related to the shipment of the 100-400L overseas.

Atleast the bigma is black(ish).

I find that my 70-200F4L, even though it's not that large, attracts a LOT of attention, and I'm sure it's because of the white colour.

I'm not denying that effect of the white lenses (although sometimes you can use that to your advantage). However, the sigma is no small cookie...and if you have that bazooka pointed at someone, or someone catches a profile of you with that bazooka pointed at someone, it's sure to attract a little attention.

Heck my POSma (70-300mm) sigma atracts attention from people (non camera people usually).

OK another question, kind of silly though. Would a canon TC work with the 100-400?

Pardon my ignorance

It will but your camera won't

In other words.. yes you can mount a T-C to the 100-400mm... but the lens will not autofocus on a 10D or Drebel with a T-con.. you will need to manual focus.

The same is true of the Sigma.. you can use either Canon or Sigma T-C with the Bigma.. in both cases you will lose AF...

To be honest, the major attraction of the 100-400 (for me) is the IS thing. But come to think of it, we have bright sun 99.9% of the year so no need for the IS really.

Ever tried shooting 400mm (640 1.6 crop factor) handheld. Very difficult without IS. You can the 10-400L, Just a thought.

Don't forget, the L-class lenses have two IS modes. One is also for panning, which can be a godsend for us sports shooters.

I'm curious how you are holding it. Are you just gripping it with your left hand in the usual fashion? Or, are you using some kind of tripod/monopod/handle?
