Ok so I have to ask a question which happens to pertain to the hockey helmits.

Im not suprized at all to see more riders use them plus the fact they have been wearing flak jackets for awhile now.

The question I have: Is there any reservations that some riders don't wear them because it's less "manly" instead of wearing hats?

If Im not mistaken there are Cowboy hats that are hard shells? Right? But fall off that Atkins diet moving slab of meat and they still don't really protect all that well.

No disrespect at all to these guys knowing their life is a flash of a second away from ending if the bull steps in the wrong direction.

The helmet issue is a very popular topic in rodeo circles at this time. It doesnt have anything to do with masculinity. Just getting on should say enough about that. The old guys say " a helmet gives a false sence of safty and the added weight effects their balance". I do not know, when I rode bulls in the 70s it just was not thought of. Bottom line , Bull rideing is inherently dangerous!! as are many sports.

Here are a couple more shots of the animal athletes that make our sport so exciteing.

Fantastic captures. Sharp and well exposed. No 1 is just great.

Try to keep your logo in one place as much as you can. Its a bit distracting to see them all over the place when watching a series of shots.

You gotta love the 1 hoof handstand in the 2nd shot.

No doubt! Twisted, on one leg, gonads flapping in the air, with a poo caked rear!!

Dale, good stuff, all the way around. How do you go about shooting bull riding? Rapid fire the entire ride?

I'm glad to hear that you dont rapid fire. I get that from guys all the time. How did you miss that I rode for almost 8 sec. All you do is hold down the button. Then I got this one this weekend was why dont you hasve more shots of my ride? The guy last weekend had like 15 shots and I only rode for about 4 sec.

When you hear someone around a rodeo arena rattle off 15 or 20 frames in succession its a dead giveaway that they havent shot much rodeo!

Thats what I told the guy. More or less I said where is the art or tallent in that. Plus it's dark as hell in this arena and using a strobe. I'mn lucky to get 8-10 shot in 8sec. Thats if the animal is giving good jumps every sec.

if i had a rope tied round my testies i'd sure be doing my best to jump out of it! ;)

Dale Miller

That rope is no more tied around his testies than the belt you hold your pants up with is tied around yours!

oh right, so whats that rope at the back for then?

HammerCope
25th of July 2007 (Wed), 09:22
Yes thats what makes them buck but its not on their Testies. You can get an animal to do the samething with out the rope. Next time you ride a horse slide back behinde the saddle. Then apply pressure around his hip area with your legs. It will buck. It does not take much pressuse.

i tried to go horse riding once on holiday but their weight restriction of 14 stones (196lbs) stopped me going :(

This is a common belief about what is called a flank strap. I can tell you it is not about the animals genitaila,if it is than explain why it also works on mares, steers, I have even seen it done with cows. The people who own these animals pay hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars for them , I dont know why someone would want to spend that much money to harm them.

These are great shots. I have started shooting rodeos and love it. Do you have any advise for someone starting out in rodeo photography?

Ya know, I don't often see a lot of bull riding around my parts either, but you've done an excellent job to show just how unbelievable these guys are. That bull's rear legs are what, 10-12 feet in the air? Can you imagine the strength it takes to get 1500 lbs. off the ground that high? Awesome shots, man.
