Hi all. I've been into photography for 2 months playing around with my S1 IS. Have about 2500 exposures.

I remembered that we have a Soviet Zenit camera. Took it out, the lenses are really nice because the apeture varies from 2 to 16 and the really solid feel to it.

My dad says that the exponometer doesn't work AND the second curtain of the shutter slows down on the end of the run, thus overexposing "left" part of the photo. (that's what I think is happening)

I would like to try and get something out of this camera. The problem is that I have zero experience with film SLRs. Maybe I could get an approximate exposure values from my S1 IS, and then shoot the same with Zenit?

What I wanna do is load 100 ISO film in Zenit. Set my S1 IS to 100 ISO too. Frame the pic I wanna make in S1 IS. It will give me X and Y exposure values. Put them in Zenit and then take a frame. Repeat the process.

Not very practical, I know. But I wanna try it. Too many childhood memories are bound to that camera.

What are your ideas? What adjustments would I have to make? Can I compare ISO of different cameras like this?

Hmm, what about buying a loose exposure meter?

I don't know. A guess is from maybe $40 and up.

Should work the way you suggested too. I'm not sure but I think the digital ISO settings are a little on the happy side, at least I have that feeling about my G5, so you may want to take some alternative exposures until you see the result.

I guess I'll just try. One pic as my S1 IS tell me to, one a stop higher, one a stop lower.

:) I remember those. Nice when it shows a camera has been around. Good luck with it.

Is there a significance to the "Olympic Addition" ?

It's a limited edition for commemoration of the moscow olympic games in the 80s

Update:

I've shoot my first roll of film. It's kinda hard without the exponometer.

I used the S1 IS to get the setting, and then basically took 3 shots of the same scene. One as S1 IS tells me to, and plus minus a stop for exposure.

Should get the pics back on wednesday.

My fingers are crossed

Good start. Keep in mind that film negs are processed with corrections. Slide film is best to get an exact correlation of exposure = results.
Keep on mind the 'sunny-16' rule, too.
1/ISO @ f-16 for bright sunlight. So, ISO 400 = 1/400 sec @ f-16. That's a good starting point.
Subtract 1 f-stop each for partly cloudy, cloudy, overcast, & dark overcast.
Add one for snow, beach sand pics, etc.
They used to include that info on a piece of paper packed with the film. A paper exposure meter.
