If you are within driving distance of the Chicago/Milwaukee area, please join Big John (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/member.php?u=25244), my wife Becky N (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/member.php?u=33178), and me at the second annual POTN invasion of the Bristol, WI Renaissance Faire on Sunday, August 26, 2007!
No where else will you find so many interesting people to photograph. This event is a people-photographer's dream! The performers at the faire, along with many of the guests, will be in lavish costumes from years-gone-by. These people are accustomed to being photographed, and there will be many photographers there.
This is wholesome family fun where people of all ages play dress-up and have a blast. There is great food and drink, and plenty to see and do. Even a special area for the kids with dozens of rides & games!
Here are the pertinent details:
Date: Sunday, August 26, 2007. (If it rains we'll reschedule Labor Day weekend.) The park opens at 10:00 am and closes at 7:00 pm.
Location: The Bristol Faire is Literally right on the Illinois-Wisconsin State line, just off I-94. Go here (http://www.renfair.com/bristol/general/maptofaire.php)for directions & mapquest.
Cost: Gate price is $18.95/adult, $9.50/child 5-12, free for children under 5.
You can save 16% if you get your tickets online here (https://tix.extremetix.com/tix/SilverStream/Pages/pgIndex.html?siteID=774)($16.95/adult, $9.00/child). You'll also need money for food, beer, cigars, souveniers, and kids' rides & games. They do not allow food & beverages to be carried in. All of the shows at the faire are free, but the performers will have their hats out afterward.
What to bring: Your camera, silly! And your flash unit! With extra batteries and all your CF cards, you'll need them! Nikonians, Pentaxinites, Sonywonies and Fujicalis are also welcome. Bring your friends!
What to wear: Whatever is comfortable. Good shoes for walking. Guys in kilts will fit right in! And I think it would be really great if we all wore an official POTN cap or shirt, which can be purchased here! (http://www.procameragear.com/potn/)
If you're planning to attend:
1) Please PM me with your real name and cell phone number (and I'll give you mine) so we can better communicate and arrange for POTN group meetings at the faire.
2) Use your signature to promote the event (see mine?)
3) Give this thread a bump and let us know you'll be there!
More info: Go to the Bristol Faire website! (http://www.renfair.com/bristol/) It's packed with information!
Did I mention there are pretty girls (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=200372) at the Faire?
Not to mention all manner of people (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=200375) who love to be photographed (if you ask nicely).
And you see some other interesting characters (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=201567) as well!
There will be more details to follow with regard to time/place to meet on the grounds. Mark your calendar, and stay tuned!
Here are some shots from previous years:

Here's a few pics from this season...the first is one of the popular street dancers "Yasmina" and the second is a satyr in full make-up. I love this place! The people are warm and freindly, and will almost always welcome the opportunity to pose for the cameras.
If you enjoy taking pictures of people, you will not be dissapointed

Ayman,
Here's a shot of last year's group (Well, part of it. We didn't get everyone together at the same time.) Christian was definitely the youngest, and he's a pro wedding shooter while most of the rest of us are amateur hacks. I really enjoyed talking with him.
I wouldn't worry about the age thing, though. At the Chicago gathering back in April there was a whole spectrum from a young teenager to senior citizens. We all had a blast. Just don't ask me to buy you a beer! ;)
It's not like we'll hang together like some papparazzi street gang all day. We'll arrange to meet a few times during the day but break into smaller groups or just wander around individually, depending on interest. It's a fairly small park and we'll bump into each other from time to time.

Do we have times setup?
Curtis N
25th of July 2007 (Wed), 18:37
Do we have times setup? The Faire website will publish a schedule for that weekend a week or so ahead of time, then we'll figure something out.
I'm leaning toward an informal meet a few minutes before the first jousing match which usually starts at 11:00. Then after the match (11:30) we can chat a bit, take a group shot, talk about what's good to see and shoot (Big John and Danellyn know the place inside & out), perhaps agree on a meeting place for later in the day, then go off in separate groups toward whatever interests us.
The structure is pretty loose and I'm open to suggestions.

OK some fast information. The parking lot opens about 9am. Cost for parking is $3 for each car. the Gates open at 10 am but there is a little pre-opening show that starts about 9:45.
I am always there by 9:15-9:30 dress in my garb and then stay until the end of the drum jam, go back to my car and then go to Phoenix for dinner after faire. Phoenix is north on 94 to highway 50 turn left on to 50 and it is like 3/4 mile on the right side. All are welcome to join me for dinner there as well.
I post all the photos I take from the faire at www.danellyn.com (http://www.danellyn.com) on the top go to danellyn of bristol and then select the year you want to view. Feel free to browse all you want.

They are actually fantasy pieces. The king is a King/black Knight The queen is a sorceress the bishops are bishops int he religous sense the knights are actually knights on horseback and the rooks are buildings. The pawns are all like baby dragons or griffons I cant remember right now.
The Man in the straw hat in the back is the one who designed the chess set and who is the normal one that is playing for discounts on his pewter pieces. Im the one in his normal chair with the black leather hat on, that is in his seat

I went to the ren faire yesterday, it started sprinkling about 1:20pm, my wife and i had brought umbrelas with us, so it was no big deal. It rained off and on the rest of the day, i have a Lowepro Slingshot 200 AW, i just picked up a couple of weeks ago, when the rain got above a sprinkle i put the rain cover over it, worked real nice it kept the bag nice and dry. I also keep a couple of plastic bags (like the kind the groceries get put in) in my bag, i walked around with one over my camera so i could still take pictures when the rain let up. We still had a good, but wet, time. I went with my wife, son and my younger brother, the rain didn't seem to dampen anyones moods, most of the people didn't there seem to mind the rain.

Ok folks, the invasion is a mere six days away, so here's an update:
* The Faire was closed due to flooding yesterday (Sunday). No doubt it will be dried out and in good shape by the 26th as long as we don't get a lot more rain. Probably not much worry about dust from the jousting arena though.
* They don't have this weekend's schedule up on their website yet, but most things don't change much. Last weekend's schedule (http://www.renfair.com/bristol/about/2007sched/7_August_18-19_2007.pdf)will be a good guide until the new one is posted.
* Just a reminder - If you want to exchange cell phone numbers with me, send me a PM with your number. This is purely optional, but might be a godsend if you get delayed, lost or separated somehow.
* If you haven't been to the Faire before, download a map & directions here (http://www.renfair.com/bristol/general/maptofaire.php).
* Allow extra time to get there, get parked, and buy your tickets (unless you buy them online). The gates to the Faire open at 10:00 but you can get parked and buy your tickets ahead of time.
* For those who are there early, we will try to gather informally outside the gate before they open. Look for the POTN straps! If you're a little late, don't sweat it.
* I would really like to see everyone at 11:30, right after the first Jousing match. Meet at the east end of the bleachers at the jousting arena. We'll take a group shot and talk about plans for the rest of the day, and hopefully Danellyn and Big John can offer some tips about what's interesting and when.
There will be no rigid structure. Go where you want, when you want. Join a crowd or venture on your own. Bring only as much gear as you can carry around all day in relative comfort. Meet people, take pictures, have fun!

Curtis, did you investigate a group rate, if we have confirmed participants? I'm not sure how much of a savings it would be off the online ticket price. the more money I can save, the better my chances are for attending. I'm looking at 2 or 3 adults, depending on if my kid wants to go also.
BTW- if you print the coupon, you save an extra $.50 over the online price, since they charge $1.00 to print each online ticket.

Curtis, did you investigate a group rate, if we have confirmed participants?I did not.
Typically in order to get group rates, you need to pay for all the tickets and collect from each individual. Then everyone has to be there at a certain place & time to distribute the tickets and settle accounts.
I didn't want to deal with the fact that sometimes people weasel out (shakin360 ;) ), or get there a little late, or simply don't show up. So if we all pay our way individually then there's no guilt, no hassle.
However, if enough of us gather before the gates open and someone (not me) wants to volunteer to serve as treasurer and do a group purchase, I don't have a problem with that.

Okay- here's the deal. I called, and we can buy group rate tickets that day if 15 or more show up. The tickets must be purchased at one time, by a single individual for the group. Prices for the group rate are 14.95 for adults (12 or over) and 7.50 for kids.
That's $4.00 off the gate price, and $2.00 off the internet price- after printing fees.
How many of you can ABSOLUTELY guarantee to meet at say 9:45 outside the gate for a group buy? I would act as treasurer for the group buy only. Any profit I keep:cool:

Maybe you should make a big POTN sign?

Hi All
Kenosha County has a flooding issue according to the news. Has this affected the faire or is it all good still? (not sure if Kenosha is in Kenosha county :) )
from Channel 3000 today:
http://www.channel3000.com/news/13944687/detail.html
"A state of emergency is in effect for Kenosha County because of heavy rains that have caused a rapid rise in the levels of the Fox and DesPlaines Rivers and other waters.
County Executive Allan Kehl, who made the emergency declaration, said flooding has occurred in and around homes, fields and roadways, and conditions could worsen because there is additional rain in the forecast."

Hey Greg, are you planning to attend this Sunday?
the schedule reads like a chinese laundry list to someone that can't read Chinese- I can't make heads or tails of it. I'll just show up and go where my feet and eyes take me.

Oh man! I want to attend but this Sunday is the Kickoff Classic, three football games await at Soldier Field. I might actually not make it to the fair this year which will be a little sad... :-(

this Sunday is the Kickoff Classic, three football games await at Soldier Field.Option 1: Big dudes in plastic pads beating each other up and fighting over a pumpkin on a big cow pasture.
Option 2: Women in corsets, low-cut bodices and chainmaille bikinis who love to have their picture taken.
Yeah, I know. Tough choice.
;)

It could be as easy as economics:
Option 1: Paid gig earns me positive income.
Option 2: Women in corsets, low-cut bodices and chain mail bikinis who love to have their picture taken puts my marriage in jeopardy and makes me move. Earns me a good time but causes me much lost income.

one of the guys was allowed in and taken around to get photos of the damages to prove to the 40 cars out side that they were actually flooded

There's more rain in the immediate forecast which we obviously don't need. But for now it looks like sunny skies this weekend.

Chris, are you bringing your daughter also? she appears to be close in age to my daughter- 14 months.
Also, I think with the 2-for-1 coupin (Ron white term), that's the best price and beats the group rate by a long shot. Those attending, try to print a copy for yourself. I should have extras, as I made 10 copies already. I'm 80-90% sure we'll be there, but with all this rain my wife isn't sure how much mud she can endure.

So far the weather is looking great for Sunday. I am a member of the bristol Discussion Board and there are no plans on being close this weekend.
Look on the bright side of things: all this rain should keep down the dust levels on all of our gear!

The weather forecast for today and tomorrow is excellent. No doubt the grounds will dry out considerably today and tomorrow will be perfect! Here is the list of people planning to attend, as of Saturday morning:
Curtis N, Becky N, Big John, Danellyn, harleydog, Franko515, pgiancola, andrewhuxman, Erapczak, dilorenzo, kbreit, hawk911, BIG H, ohtoberich, neil85, yamezbond, Nanboh, admeyer, ifixsharp, cadams, dr.Zarkoff.
Note: If you make a last minute decision to join us, feel free! The more, the merrier!
That's 21 POTNers plus kin. Looks like a nice group for a great time!
Minor traffic backups are normal at the faire entrance, so allow a few extra minutes for that.
* For those who are there early, we will try to gather informally outside the gate before they open. Look for the POTN straps! If you're a little late, don't sweat it. hawk911 will have 2-for-1 coupons for those who want one, or you can print your own here (http://www.kenoshacvb.com/pdf/BristolRenaissanceFairecoupon.pdf).

Well I hope everyone had a good time. There were a few that didn't make it to the 11:30 Rendezvous at the Jousting arena and I hope you at least got there and were able to get some good shots.
It's difficult to keep a big group together at a place like this. With so much to see and so many people, we all got spread out pretty quick. I pretty much knew that would happen so I hope no one felt abandoned.
I'm thankful for the good weather and look forward to another local gathering somewhere, hopefully this fall.

Had a great time, and although I was late arriving, and early leaving I did get to meet several POTNers. I also met some who were not...as I asked just about anyone I saw shooting Canon if they were part of the POTN outing. Hopefully I was a good ambassador for the board, and we will get a few more new members.
I was glad to meet you Curtis, and Becky too. Many thanks for organizing this, and I will look forward to future outings!

Harleydog, how did you get such a close picture of the Kestral (the bird in your second post). I have been to the faire four times in the past two years and never got close enough to get that good a picture of the Kestral. Dumb luck... I was standing at the end of the arena and he started going after the grass hopper, then landed just in front of me and would not leave till he finished his snack. I wish I had not cut his tail off though.
