...Actually it's prolly more a feature of the camera i guess, i wouldnt know though as this is the only flash i got.
When mounted (and on of course) and you push the DOF button, it pulses flashes so you can actually see with the lens stopped down.

Yes, that is one of the weird little features on a 550EX that you don't find much elsewhere.

This is a modeling light, it also allowes you to see how the shadows fall. Kinda a preview of how the scene will be lit.

I use it to get my two year old daughter to look my way before taking her picture. LOL

Modelling flash works just fine with the 420EX, too. You just have to set it to slave mode to make it work. Not sure why Canon set it up that way but they did.
