Is there too much empty space in the cropped version? I'm not sure if it works of not but I like the sharpness and DOF in the image. Your comments are welcomed.

I don't want to clone flowers in as I'd prefer to shoot the image again to get it right.

Hi David,
Personally I don't think there's too much emty space. I too like the sharpness of the flower in the foreground, however, I think I would have preferred a shallower DOF.

BTW I had a look at your your galleries in fotopic, some great shots there.
My favourites are "Boat at Craster Harbour" and "Seaham harbour retake" oh and not forgetting "Zak" ( for its quality and some sentimental reasons)

Top one looks a little out of synch to me, but I don't know how you'd
go about cropping it. I like the pictures, especially the red tinge of the
backgroud

David,

Greetings, this is a tough call, and what I would want would be the best of both worlds. I like the orientation of the first shot and that is what I would work with.

On one hand, I would like to have seen the composition shot from standing a little to the left. With this, the flowers might have seemed more "in line" and offering a more dramatic effect for demonstrating the DOF falloff. (With a drop to a lower f-number as well, to enhance the effect.)

On the other hand, I would like to have seen the composition shot from standing a little to the right. THAT direction seems to show more green in the background grass and less brown. I find the brown grass very distracting, and it kills the mood of lushness that the rest of the shot brings.

In either case, I might start with a vantage point that is closer to the ground, too.

You are definitely in the right neighborhood, and the shot, as is, is not bad. It just seems that to get any better is like a no-win situation.

For what its worth, the uncropped version made me think the other flowers were stuck up and snooty, but this nice little guy was much friendlier and wanted you to take his picture

I see what you mean!

David, I find that by scrolling so I don't see the area above the flower top of the first one, I like it better. Maybe crop a bit off the top down to the flower? And just burn the top-right corner a touch?

Thanks for the imput everyone.

Rad,
"Best of both worlds" I think I wanted much the same as you and couldn't choose which one when I was taking the shot!

kd5izq,
"Stuck-up & Snooty"
 I also see what you mean!

Lomond,
Thanks for your kind comments.

Frank,
I'll have a go at what you suggest, since I read you comment I've been playing with the scroll bar and I like what I see.

Thanks again everyone.
