I used the search but couldn't find enough information.

Ok so I'm going to be taking photos of a drummer that are going to be in some drumming magazine and I had a couple questions...

I know what I have to do for camera settings and such but I'm having another dilemma. Right now I'm shooting with a Canon 20d and the only lenses I have are the Canon 50mm f/1.8II and the Canon 28-135mm IS. I was wondering if you guys thought that these lenses would produce pictures of high enough quality to go into a magazine. If not do you think I should take the leap and go buy a L series lens?

These are going to be my first pictures to go into a magazine and I really want to get great shots to really try and get my name out there.

Also if you guys had any pictures of drummers, please feel free to post so I can get some ideas.

Thank you!

At a guess, I'd say that the 50mm should be able to cut it. It depends on what lighting is there and how easy it'll be for you to position yourself around the band.

Thank you!

This isn't a concert setting. It's a photoshoot setting except I'll be using concert lights. It's going to be in a shop with everything set up and I just have to come in and take pictures for the drummer. I can get as close as I want.

All I really have to do is emphasize the drumset and make it look nice because these pictures are for his new drum company endorsement deal.

Sounds like a cool gig.

The 50mm will be good because it can work with realtively low levels of light, and if you have a fairly wide aperture, you'll be able to blur out the background quite well.

Take a few, look at the shots on the lcd screen, and go from there.

Yeah I'm going to see if I can go over there like an hour ahead of time to take some test shots and check out the setting.

Great idea.

Also look at some of the threads in Performing Arts section here. You might be able to pick up tips there. I'm hardly an expert, I've never shot anything like that before...!
