S500 shutter lag

Hi everyone

Does anyone know if the quickshot mode on the ixus s500 is a gimmick or a fully functional feature. If functional and reduces shutter lag, then to what degree exactly. I have checked the manual several times and found nothing. It claims the function is for fleeting moments nothing more, what kind of fleeting moments? Sport, a bird in flight or perhaps a speeding car?

Good morning!

I have an S400 w/o that feature but if memory serves, I think your Quick Shot mode pre-sets your cam for specific focus distance that will LIKELY cover just about anything thereby eliminating your camera's need to focus thus allowing a quick shot!

The quickshot feature I've found on my S500 didn't hardly do a thing for shutter lag. I've also tried getting rid of that intelligent focus feature and just used the center of screen focus method but that'd didn't hardly do anything for the lag either. Used full manual mode, no difference. I made the mistake of buying the sandisk ultra flashcard thinking that write speed on the disk was the problem with the camera being slow to react but I guess it's the camera it'self. I can't believe I spent almost 500 bucks on this thing only to not be able to have it take a pic when I press the button.. I missed so many good shots cuz of this lag.. arghhhhhh I wanna go back to film now!!! >:(

The only cameras with a shutter lag that you will most likely desire will be SLRs like the Rebel.

You can prefocus but that's about it. Shutter lag is only 0.8 secs. Some less expensive cams with little shutter lag include the Kyocera S5R and Fujifilm S700.

Sorry you're not happy with the S500. The S400 is excellent, in my experience, and does the job. You can also try taking pix in continuous mode to get a sequence of images. If that doesn't work, try the Rebel at $1000 (US).

It does it's job if they're posed photos or slow moving objects but for action shots forget it. I used to have the ol s100 2 megpixel digital elph and thought that the lag sucked. Hoped that 4 yrs later and the faster flashcards they would have fixed the problem but I was mistaken. If you use the flash it's even slower. Even my Sanyo 8100 cell phone camera takes pics instantly and by instantly I mean right as I press the button the pic is taken. I know it doesn't have any flash or autofocus processing to do just static focus but you'd figure if a cell phone cam can do it a 500 dollar dedicated camera can too. Don't get me wrong I love everything else about my s500 but the lag is the only downside for me. I have missed so many "perfect shots" of my kids and pets in action because of this lag.

I have a S400. I prefocus by pressing the button partiallly down. Does ok job.
