I've just stepped up to a Canon EOS D30, but I'm having some major difficulties shooting in arenas and other areas with less than adequate light. It doesn't matter if it's a sports event or a simple group photo, the results are all the same - I'm using the sports setting and my shutter speed drops to like 1/30 (at least). You can guess the results - ghost-like images if somebody moves a hair.

I thought I could remedy it by purchasing a Speedlite 550EX flash. No dice. Same results.

I've tried every conceivable setting - including all those suggeted in the users manual - and I've struck out at every setting. Could someone please point me down the path of enlightenment so I can actually get halfway decent results. All help is appreciated.

Simple - switch to Shutter Priority and up the ISO setting.
It's just like film photography, if the light's too poor you use faster film.

Well exposed D30 images are good at up to ISO800 and surprisingly good at ISO1600. If you do get too much noise, then there are tools to deal with that, eg www.neatimage.com or http://helicon.com.ua
