My wife has a canon SD 630 we took aload of pictures and 70% of them ( jpeg) are corrupt. They can't open but still i can view them on the cammera screen. Cannon has no solution and I was wondering if anyone know of a reliable program that I can use.

It could be that the files are corrupt but the thumbnails aren't, which is why the camera can display them.

I'm a bit sceptical that you'll get anything usable back, but you could try Sandisk RescuePro. The best way to get this is to buy an Extreme III memory card; it's bundled with the card for free. This way you get another memory card which I'd use as your first line card in the camera in the future, in case the problem was with the card itself.

Click for details on the Sandisk site (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Catalog(1060)-SanDisk_Extreme_III_SD_and_SDHC_Cards.aspx).

B&H has the 1GB card for $29.95 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/356018-REG/Sandisk_SDSDX3102490_1GB_Extreme_III_Secure.html) and the 2GB for $40.95 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/430918-REG/Sandisk_SDSDX32048R_2GB_Extreme_III_Secure.html) - you may well find them cheaper if you shop around, though beware of fakes if you buy on eBay (the majority of branded memory cards sold on eBay are fake).

Hi there, welcome aboard!
not sure if you're going to be able to get anything useful, but I have used PC Inspector on a number of occasions and found it useful. It is really designed to recover deleted or formatted cards but wouldn't hurt to have a try with it to see what it makes of corrupted files. At the very least you'll get familiar with recovery from accidentally deleted stuff which I think is really useful.

are you downloading the pictures to your computer via camera or by a card reader?

Photorescue 3/0 works great - if the files are really there - may be able to rebuild them - just google it and try the demo - if it says they are there, then pay to get the full version, which will save the images. Good luck.

Hi all Thanks for all the help.My problems aren't quite fixed. I used a program called Jpeg Recovery 2. It its results were puzzling. I have about 900 pictures. When I ran it
( and i verified after with the files that i can see)
it seems that the first 40 or so pictures are being reused over and over.
Pic1, Pic2,....Pic 40, then pic 41 is called pic 41 but it is actually pic 1. So i have multiple copies of the the first 40 pics. Now the confusing thing is that my camera still shows me all my proper images. 1-999. Anyone have any ideas? Maybe my card reader is malfunctioning. Thanks for the help again :)

As I said earlier, I suspect the thumbnails aren't corrupt but the files themselves are. I'm afraid I can't see a happy ending with this one - get back what you can with a data recovery tool and I think you just have to let the rest go.

Once the sectors that make up the files have been overwritten (or a sufficiently recent copy of the FAT is lost and there's simply not enough left to work out which fragments belong to which files), it's "game over", I'm afraid. This is one reason to reformat your cards when you clear them out - it reduces the chance of file fragmentation and maximises the likelihood of data recovery working.
