I just went and bought the Rebel and so far I LOVE it. But I have a few questions that may be some one can answer for me.

First all does the Rebel come with the remote like the G3 has?
if so mine wasn't in the box. And I have looked to try and find some where one some of the package that came with it and It tells you about it in the manual but was just wondering do I have to purchase that separately?

And too what about the zoom on the camera.
I can't get it to work I have to do it manual to zoom in and out.
Is there something I'm missing? That I'm over looking? But it want zoom out automatically. I have to do it. Does the Rebel not zoom out like the G3? I would appreciate any help Thanks.

I'm still reading the manual and trying to figure out things.
I got a lot to learn still.

It does not come with a remote, and the lens does not zoom for you.

Welcome to the world of complete control.

Hi Timmy,
That was a quick reply thanks. So I do have to purchase the remote separately? Do you know where I can buy one?

So I do it all manually zoom? What are the 2 little buttons on the back that have the - and + ? what are they used for? sorry all these ? but it's all new to me. So here I am back again to ask questions like I did when I first got the G3 LOL.
I appreciate your help thanks. Gail,

Will the remote that came with the Powershot G3 work with the Rebel?
Just asking probably a dumb question.

The two little buttons are to zoom in and out of the display. Are you sure you really need the remote. Would save your cash for some great lenses. Hope you don't get hooked like me. I bought my D-rebel in March and just traded up for the mark 2. The rebel is an awesome camera and makes learning fun.

Gail... Welcome to the (D)SLR world! As Timmy implied, it really is a whole new world. My suggestion is to sit down with the camera and go through the manual to get a feel for the basic functions and features. Take a lot of pictures, change the settings, fiddle, etc. and review the results. That's probably the best way to get a good fel for what you are in for. After that, I am sure you will have more specific questions for the forum.

No, the G3 remote won't work... there are remotes available though.

Hi Photorob,
No I don't need the remote guess I just kind of got use to having it with the G. Yes it seems to be a awesome camera. I love it so far. Haven't really got to check it out yet. Got it late this afternoon so. I will take it out for a spin tomorrow lol. Can't wait I will not sleep all night thinking of it. . I'm so excited !! I have wanted this camera for so long.

I have just the cheap canon lens that I had with my SLR camera.
75-300mm. But as you said I will probably get hooked.
And go crazy buying lenses and things. I think I'm already hooked. LOL  And It's sure a big step up from the G3.

Yes I will just have to sit down and fiddle with it. And learn the settings.
I'm sure I will love it even more as I learn the basic functions more.
Thanks Gail, :D

I also want to say that you should dedicate a good 2 hours of your time to reading through the menu and playing with the camera.

If you dont understand any of the following (And by understand i mean fully understand is how each one will change a photograph individually, and idealy eventually how a combination of all of them will effect a photograph, this is before you even take the picture of course):

ISO speed
Aperature
Shutter speed
Focal length

Then you ought to first read an article like this:

http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/camera.htm

Once you get those basics down your ready to go take pictures with a *cough* Real camera *cough* (i hope no one from the P&S forums reads this    ).

The day you stop learning is the day your the best photographer in the world...and i dont think anyone holds that title.

Glad to see you got your camera. I am not sure if anyone answered the question about the zoom if the lens has AF and MF your camera zoom should work properly.

What I beleve you said was you used a different lens if thats the case the AF may not be a option.

The lens that come with the camera should work just fine.

One thing I am sure your going to love is the Depth of Field this camera does a great job with that.

Now all we need is some pictures from you.

I posted a few photos over in share forums.
I'm just amazed at the DOF. So I had to share.
I zoomed in on the picture of my husband and couldn't believe how clear it was you can see ever detail in his face and his grey in his hair really showed up so close.

Hello Gail,

I know the feeling. moving from the G3 to the DSLR , you lose some those nifty features. I moved from the G3 to 10D. The usage model is different. BTW your DRebel give much more control, but the I think is has less built-in processing (one eg is that: Image are not automaticaly color saturated) ; Which means more time on photoshop.

I know that (PS) is useful & crucial . But with too much image manipulation, I feel that it takes away the purity & art away from photography.

Welcome to the DSLR trap
I bet you will look soon to buy other lenses....
Rudra, if you want saturated colors, you can just define your own settings in the camera and increase the color to the max. So no need to adjust in photoshop.

Gail, I know you from the tlc forums...

Grats on switching to a dSLR! I made the same move form a G3 to a D300 and I am finding that I need more from my camera. The dRebel is a great camera to get started. The one thing that shocked me was the amount of $$$ spent on lenses and accesories.

As of now now the camera body was the least expensive investment. Do yourself a favor and try not to let yourself use an L lens... thats when the bank account really takes a pounding.
