View Full Version : Lens Hood question

I lost a lens hood somehow (somewhere) and while I have no idea how I could have done this it has prompted this question: "Do you put any sort of identifying mark or label on your lens hood(s)?"

I have to think that someone found my hood but did not know who it belonged to.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

they cost $10 - and most people if they found one would have no idea what it is!

Thats a pretty good question, and honestly I havent even thought about it.

The only thing is IF I were to lose it, what am I going to put on it to assure me that if someone were to find it, they would know what to do with it.

My address? Ok sure maybe but in what way, a sticker? All it needs to do is get wet and it has lost its purpose. Etched into the hood some way? No way, if I want to sell it, then its gonna be all etched in to and Im not sure if someone else will want that on the hood. What if they lose it, someone else finds that address and mails it back to me?

It certainly sucks to lose something like that (I lost a lens cap) but as cheap as most are, I would just buy another one.

Unless of course its one of those HUGE ones. BUT then again how could you loose one of those?:p

Mine was for my 24-105mm F/4L IS and was $43 at Adorama (B&H was $10 higher).

Good point about resale, had not thought of that. I don't work in the rain much though.

ive never lost a lens shade before because they are always on my lens. when im not using it, its revered on the lens.

but putting a sticker would work but would look really ugly. and u know how us photographers wanna look kewl!! if u engrave it, i doubt anyone would be able to read very easy against the black background. and if u decide to sell, who'd buy it?

My lenses won't fit in my primary bag if reverse them so I take the hoods off and put them in a LowePro pouch attached to the bag. (I hated to buy another bag.) Apparently I set this one somewhere else.

Guess I learned a $43 plus shipping lesson! :o

Well I settled on putting a black label on my hoods (and a few other items).

Using a Brother P-Touch label maker:

These labels are laminated and waterproof. Time will tell how they hold up.

Here is what one looks like on the hood, the new one:

That's actually kind of nice. Are they easy to remove if you want it gone?

If you put the sticker closer to the inside edge, it'll blend in more with the camera and not be so apparant on your hood.

Yes, I pealed one off to see. The stick fairly well but not so much that you can't get it off.

I put it on the underside of the hood so most folks will never see it, unless I am shooting over their head.:)

The problem is if a "Hood as Canon ET-86 EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens" has any quality, or if it may just fall off the lens after a while.

well if the canon one fell off, then at least the after market one is a lot cheaper when it falls off. I have after market hoods on all my lenses and they don't fall off.

good luck!
