This Girl Lorena is looking to get into modeling, and wants me to do a little portfoilio for her this weekend coming up. Anyway i went out and brought a Speedlite 430ex, and battery grip and wanted to go out and snap some shots to learn this new world of flash Photography, so we came out to be my test subject:lol: . Tell me what you think:D

I'm not really liking any of them.

#1 - huge shadow behind her. looks like you were using the popup flash and holding the camera vertical

#2 - not as bad, but still a dark shadow by her arm.

#3 - shadow on the ceiling behind her.

#4 and #5 are both unevenly lit .

she doesn't seem to be very happy in these pictures either.

edit* I forgot to mention, for dark pictures like this I like to use a reflector

How did you shoot your flash? It looks like you zoomed in your shoeflash so it only lights up the face.

#1 and #3 are your best shots, but alot of the photo, other than subject's face, is underexposed.

I agree with Michael, Except the happy part, since I think you are trying to give that "tough girl" look, however, I just looked at your other pics in your portfolio and I think the two things you need to work on is 1. composition 2. lighting. Keep shooting...

Model is very attractive, but I think the images are a bit glaring...

Maybe that is not the right word, but anyway, it looks like too much direct flash to me.

#1 is nice and she posed it well, but the wall is too bright on her right side, and she has a hot spot on her left cheek that is distracting. I think that if the light was more even, it would make all her skin the color of her right shoulder, which is a good tone, IMHO.

#2 is too bright, but I think the pose would make a nice pic, if cropped from about mid breast to a bit above her head, and maybe low key, or perhaps high key. Kind of a pic with someone with something on her mind, but since I am not good at high or low key images either, I can't give you much advice on how to go about it. I just bracket and see what happens.
#3 and #5 didn't do too much for me.
#4 is a good pose, but again the spotlight/dropoff lighting issue.

Thanks for sharing.

Images look like they have some motion blur. Probably due to low shutter speeds. Don't be afraid to use higher ISO's when working with flash. She is a beautiful model and deserves beautiful images...

DJ, Go buy a reflector, it shouldn't cost you that much, albeit I understand it is a little late now over there in the East Coast.

You know what? If you have one of those sun reflectors that you put on the windshield of your car to keep up from baking, you can use that as a reflector and reflect your flash off of that so that you can soften the light a bit when you shoot her. The other thing is to try to shoot with white walls. Good Luck, share the pics, remember it ain't no fun unless the homies can have some! :p :D
