I'm in the market for a camera mount that mounts on the outside of a car so i can take shots like this

The ones I've seen are quite expensive and suction. Are suction mounts safe? I don't want to damage my G5.

I have seen professional SteadyCam based gear that cost quite a bit more than your camera. Any fixed solution is going to subject your camera to vibrations that could be damaging after a while and probably blur the images most of the time. You also need to give consideration to dust and pollutants that could be driven into the camera by wind. I would just do it hand held on a good monopod with a good ball head.

Can't help much with the mounts...
If you are using a G5 I would recommend getting the adapter that allows you to put a filter on the front of the lens. I believe it clips on and covers the entire zoom mechanism. THis will help prevent dust getting into the lens.
Alternativly some of the underwater housings would protect the camera well.

How often are you going to take this type of photo? Is it going to be worth the time, money and effort?

Probably every once in awhile. I know my shots won't be perfect or anything but I think once i get the hang of my camera and how to shoot with that mount then I may use it more.

you culd always set the picture up still life and then use photoshop to do the motion blur

the one i have now is from a store in England though...the ones i have seen online cost a lot, you are paying for the pump action suction cup though, which pretty much locks onto the surface...
they are very ezpensive, the one i used has two suction cups, i can hang from 2...one is enough for a smaller camera...the car is going pretty slow most times these are used though...although we've places video cameras on this thing befor and gone driving for school projects and stuff
