I saw somewhere on the net, someone used a universal remote to trigger their camera. Does this really work? Can I take my little $5 RCA remote from Radio Hack and program it to trigger the camera? If so, what's the code? I have the Digital Rebel (unleaded)
I know there's probably a thread around here somewhere that might describe this, but I went thru 3 pages of Search topics. *cry*

hmm... I'm not too sure about the universal bit- but I bought the canon wireless remote control and I must admit I was slightly disappointed; although I probably expected too much and bought it for the wrong reasons- What I wanted was the remote shutter release on the cable; which I later bought; the wireless must be used like in front of the camera; you can't stand to the side or behind...

I haven't seen a Universal Remote patch - but i did get a radio wireless remote for my XT from a website called www.gadgetinfinity.com. its a Hong Kong company and has many wireless remote devices (make sure you read carefully and order the correct one - its different from the 30D, etc remotes. At 29.95 including shipping, it was well worth it. As long as I am within about 100 feet of the camera I can trigger it (doesn't require direct line of sight to the camera either...granted, its cheaply made, but it works quite well. I've had it about 2 months and have used it taking bird pictures in 90 plus weather while I sat in the den looking out the window for the best shots!
Hope this helps.

The only way to do this reliably with range is with Pocket Wizards. The will work up to 1500". Plan on spending $$. 2 PW are about $400 plus a cable for another $100.
There are other brands that are cheaper. I use the PWs with my strobes so they get a bit more use than just as a remote camera trigger.

Yes, I just got the set up with 2 PW and 1 cable from camera to PW. It was around $380 for the whole thing.

______-
That's the problem with Canon's wireless remote: it is infrared triggered (line of sight) instead of RF triggered. With the latter, you can have the transmitter inside your pants pocket and trigger it.

I got one from ebay (non canon brand) for like 16 bucks shipped, has 2 buttons one that has a 2 second delay and 1 that will take the picture instantly, I've messed with it very little, due to time, but looks like it does it's job.
