View Full Version : NEW SERVER INFO

POTN has just moved to new server with much more powerful hardware and software. This means especially bye bye to total blackouts when I do backups or we are hit by slashdot effect. I short: page load response time and stability under ridiculous load should be good.

We have a new search engine which is very accurate and very fast. You should know that it currently updates search database every 5 minutes so what you just typed will be indexed in next 5 minutes. It can handle terms like
2.8
f/4
70-200
1.2L
which were impossible in normal Vbulletin/MySQL (FULLTEXT) seach.

I do database backups these first couple of weeks moch more often than normally. This means 45 second pause in database (page load waits) once in about 2 hours.

Ads will be added back when DNS is fully propagated.

For those interested in technical details:
CPU: 2 x Intel Xeon-Woodcrest 5148-DualCore-LV [2.33GHz] (four cores in total)
RAM: 8GB
DISKS: 2 x 73GB 15k rpm SAS-SCSI, 1 x 250 GB SATA II
Server Software: Litespeed Enterprise 3.2 (using four cores)
PHP 5 (latest) + ACP + Memcache(d)
MySQL 5 (latest)
everything 64 -bit
Sphinx search engine
etc.

Yes, the address move is in progress. It will take anything from 1 hour to 48 hours - just try to open http://photography-on-the.net/forum and if you see the active forum (this one) you can stop using the IP.

Sometimes the DNS change is "flakey" for a while because routes change dynamically. This means in plain english that for few hours the real address works and sometimes not - it will stabilize shortly.

We are moving faster than ever.... well done... now go get a nice glass of wine and relax :)

Pekka

That load delay just now was one backup I mentioned about earlier. It took about one minute.

I felt that, wasn't bad at all. The only problem with this server is that now I can chatter faster and my post count will get embarrassingly high. Can you reset it to 0 after every 6000 posts?? :D

Yeah but when i search "pekka" i get this:
Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.
If the problem persists it could mean search engine is temporarily offline

Does this mean you are not real?

So I am ignorant about this...is this server in your home or office as opposed to some big host elsewhere? If it is, does it not require some super internet connection? I am just curious...thanks for the stellar work!

What keyword(s) you used? With this search you should not use any "keyword" or (keyword) or +keyword stuff. Just put words in a row.

Note that

70-200 f/2.8L

is different search than

70-200 2.8L

It is very precise.

This machine is hosted in US by an excellent company called Softlayer. They rent servers for people like me. They have dozens of powerful pipes to all over the world. The server itself is at 100 mbit network connection to internet and I can upgrade it to gigabit connection later when needed.

Thank you.

and, I agree with Weka - sorta. It was 7:30pm here and the dog got some exercise at that point. Now I should buy a treadmill for 'walkies'. :)

Ready to rock, Pekka!

What's wierd is the dns. Sometimes the DN resolves, sometimes it doesn't. I'm going to the same static dns server. Who knows, maybe as all zones flatulate over the next 48 hours things will stabilize.

Well just playing around with search speed. Impresive.
Decided I wanted to do a Members count list based on posts.

20K + = 4
10K-20K = 18
5k-10K = 78
1K-5K = 527

500-999 = 638
1-499 = 45084

Seem to have lost some people somewhere "Members: 111,483 "

I've excluded all zero posters from member list, even if there are many who have been with us a long time without never posting any messages.

Thank you Pekka for such a great place. In the near future I will definitely send some money along.
In the mean time you must have a huge amount of storage for all of the pictures that are uploaded. Do you ever purge them or should we do that on our own?
Thanks again.
Tim

No need to purge unless you want to. Having your own outsourced gallery is encouraged, though - it is good for us and better for you as you can have bigger files and control their use totally.

Eventually we might put some restrictions to amount of files but at the moment it's going ok.

Problem with attachments is not disk space or amount of files, but that Vbulletin does not allow placing them on another physical server with other than internal networking. If I could do that (without hacks) I could distribute bandwidth between this and image server and not worry about POTN getting near my bandwidth limit in year or two (and going over is very expensive).
