I have tried to read and research on the Digital Photo Gallery Database but I still am somewhat lost and new to this. It seems that most people use Dphoto or other gallerys to store there photo collection and then use Digital Photo Gallery Database to link these together. Could I get some advice on which service is the best and most economical over the long run if I wanted to keep several hundred photos for friends and family to enjoy. Thanks for your help.

in my opinion you are best off creating your own gallery. free software like jalbum makes it very easy to create webpages with little or no knowledge needed about webdesign.
you could use the webspace provided to you by your isp, which you most certainly have. photography and webdesign go well together so why not try and learn a bit about it
if you really cant or dont want to do it, im sure there are threads here recommending (or not) free services ... personally i dont really know any good ones
once you have a gallery online you can link them up with this site's database of galleries, you are right about that
