I use Porta. Cheap (read free) and easy.

I use Coppermine for mine (see website in signature). Completely customizable without much headache and very versatile. Free but you need a webhost that supports PHP and MySQL.

You can also set it up with Lightroom, it gives you a couple of options.

I used Porta for a while and really liked it, really fast and easy to use.
I moved all my images to a proper hosted service (Photoshelter) but it does cost and maybe overkill for your needs but I love it.
www.photoshelter.com
After reading your needs, Photoshelter is overkill but worth looking at in future.

I've used gallery1 for years on my personal site and never had any problems with it. It can be a bit tricky to customize unless you're comfortable chopping up html & php files however.
I'm just setting up a new site using gallery2, which seems better so far (for options anyways) but has the added layer of complexity by adding in a database to the mix. Not sure how easy it is to customize yet though, sorry.

Another happy Coppermine user here. Mine's pretty bog standard without any customisations except for a theme I liked and that was very easy to add. The only problems I've had is with my comments getting spammed. I did see there was a Capatcha addon, but I couldn't it working on my version.

Another Gallery 2 (http://gallery.menalto.com/) user here. I have a family gallery online and must say that it's been very trouble free for me; some of my family members are not very computer literate and have no issues uploading / viewing pictures. The Captcha interface for comments is a blessing.
If you are installing this on a slower machine, Gallery v1 is still available and gets updated.

Never saw this before... just found it.
This page (http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/webpublish/fwgallery.html) lists and reviews many options. /Dan

Which is precisely why I disable the Comments functionality of Coppermine.
I've used Coppermine twice for my websites and it's not bad. I did try Exposure Manager, which I thought was far better, but I'm not at the level yet where my photos could sell. So, I went back to Coppermine which is free as part of GoDaddy Linux web hosting packages.

Yeh, mine are turned off at the moment also. I downloaded the Capatcha plugin about a month ago and tried to get it going. Supposedly it's built into (core) the next major release. Till then the comments are off. I get Coppermine as part of my hositng also and the Fanstastico script to install Coppermine was super easy.

Adobe CS2 and CS3 both have basic gallery creation packages incorperated into them. I use one for my website. Very similar to the Flash gallery thing you have top buy.

Hi,
First post here, have been lurking a while :p
For my website which is under development, I use Envision from Inscripts .. http://www.envisionv2.com
Its very customizable and the guys at Inscripts have gone out of their way to make it work the way I wanted it to.
I hope my first post here does not come across as spam .. lol

After doing more research, I'm not so sure about CM anymore. When I first used CM, I was satisfied. However, now that I'm more interested in how my gallery is set-up with Albums, I'm not pleased. CM doesn't have Sub-Album functionality; only Categories. Maybe they are the same but I don't want all the photos of one subject (ie Architectural) in one large album. I want the ability to create Sub-Albums.
The powers-that-be at CM don't seem too interested in updating their code to have Sub-Albums (one developer is a jerk about it).

I cant understand the concept of Sub album.
Isnt it same as categories.
For example I can have a category Architechture
In Architechture I can have a subcategory Mughal
In that I can have a sub sub category "Indian"
And then I can have albums in that
Anyways you can look at gallery2 also
