View Full Version : Cloudy mountain skies above and below

It was a cloudy morning and as I approached the summit of Yr-Arran deep in thick mist with little visiblity. I had more or less given up hope for any decent summit shots. I sat there at the summit thinking well at least I am here in this beautiful spot in perfect silence . The only thing to be heard was the wind and the occasional birds. I chomped on my last nutty cereal bar and had a swig of water then got up and started to make my way down.

As I walked away from the summit down the ridge that would take me back to my wild camp I looked down to the ground careful to make sure my footing on the rocky surface was study as there were steep drops to the left that I didn't want to find myself falling into all be it for a lapse in concentration. When something caught my eye. I looked up only to see a short glimpse of the sun in a tiny break in the clouds. I stopped in my tracks and watched. Slowly small breaks in the cloud gave way to small patches of blue sky.

Quickly I pulled out my tripod and setup my camera as the breaks got bigger as wisps of cloud rushed by me. I was facing the sun so I quickly put 5 stops of grads on and waited and waited....and waited. The clouds thickened again and my hopes were dashed. I looked down considering wether to pack away.

I touched the camera, looked up and then this happend......

4 and 5 are the best of the bunch but I like 3 and 6 also. Not sure how to improve 1 and 2 since it looks like difficult lighting but they are not quite there for me. The lighting in 5 is surreal!

Well done overall!

Thanks...maybe there is not enough colour? I tend not to over saturate and there was little colour in the scene give that most of it was mist and cloud :) For me this is not why these scenes appeal but rather for the sheer beauty of nature and the shapes and form of the clouds.

This was not a planned moment that I had time to contemplate the shot rather than a glimpsing moment I was fortunate to witness and expecially to capture. It's one thing to see the image but to be there was a moment of granduer ;)

Wow, very dramatic, the first 3 shots. Although 5 is pretty amazing too with the fiery color through the clouds.

Excellent! Wow! Great!

I agree the first 3 are kind of trippy, of those I like #3 best.

Jammy bugger.

4's superb, but the whole series; really cool.

Jammy bugger.

Both for being there and doing it.

Really nice shots. The only negative comment would be that I don't like the purple tint. Just don't think it suits these type of shots.

Was that the colour of your filters or just a result of having 5 stops of difference?

Thanks :) It is probably due to the blue sky reflecting off the top of the clouds that give the impression of purple. I suppose I could colour correct but then that would not represent the true colours of the scene hmmmm :)

Number 5 is the best but the rest are really good too. :)

Nothing needs "improving". I wonder how many of us will ever have the opportunity to capture images like this - and we're offering technical advice.:cool:

Print them all large and show them off.
