View Full Version : Wall of Frames - Does Anyone Else Have One At Home?

The painters will be finished tomorrow and all my walls have been patched. Which means PARTY!:lol::lol: No nail holes for pictures. Start from scratch.

I'm thinking about doing the Wall of Frames to show off the many pictures I've taken of my family and fun times. No 2 frames are alike, and most are 5x7 or 8x10 and some are 4x6. If you have a Wall of Frames in your home already, can you take a picture of if for me and post it? I cannot figure out the best way to hang the pictures.

Also, I have many, many free walls now, so I may do several rooms like that because I think I have over 100 framed pictures, some still in boxes. And how would you organize them? Oh, and I know some will tilt if anyone just moves. Do you use magnet and coins to counter the weight? Thanks, in advance for any help.

Good luck Suzy. I asked the same thing about a year ago and only got one or two pics and not much help. I still have yet to change mine or hang any new ones. :o

One thing I did think of though is NOT using nials this time. At Christmas I found these 3M hangers for Christmas lights. They have adhesive on the back and a little hook. I plan to try and use them incase I change my mind when I do the wall. I know you can get them at Target.

Well, we don't have different size frames, but about 12 quick framed (Hobby Lobby has these glass quick frames with plastic backs to hold the glass and provide holes at the landscape and portrait positions for hanging) 11x14 pictures with faux mats from photoshop super imposed on the photos arranged in a semi rectangle above our couch. The only issue now is that we need some ceiling lights to bring the photos alive.

My biggest problem is just that, Mike, what happens if I change my mind and the stupid nail hole is there. :( What to do? I think I will get the adhesive stuff and try it. My biggest problem with that is that I have 2 sons under 12 and balls go flying around the house. How secure are those things?

They stayed on the outside of my house all through the Christmas season without any trouble. I might test it on something without glass in it first before using it on the frames.

Sorta, but not like this:

because I think it looks terrible.

Check these out Suzy. Similar to what I was going to use but bigger and more secure.

A roll of thin self adhesive insulation foam cut into squares & stuck to the two bottom back corners of the frame will keep them from tilting.

Yes, that would be the answer, except when I put 25 pictures up on one wall and decide to change every one of them. Then I look like I have a wall with skin problems. ;)

Suzie -

I have FOUR sons doing the same exact thing. Nothing ever stays sane here. One son had an anger fit (he's now 10 but when he did this - he was like 8 1/2) and slammed the door open and made a nice hole (I had just installed a door stop for this very reason - didn't help did it :()

I have patched so many holes in this house, I keep the painters on retainer - they come back every year just before x-mas so my house looks normal (I usually wind up hosting the holidays - yucccccccchhhhhhhh).

Maybe we can have a mess contest instead? :D

:lol: only if you use a different paint.

As long as you use the same paint which was just put on you will not even see the touchups when dry. Use a q-tip for the holes if you want. I've done it, works wonders.

Painters left early today since they finished what they had planned and my sons went around and touched every wall. :( What the heck is wrong with boys? I need a drink. Diet Cokes all around!

Aw man...I know what that is like....my son did the same, but my house is new only 5 months old. Had to have the walls touched up several times.

Uhhh....I'll have mine Coke...with crown;).

A dab of toothpaste first, to "spackle" the hole. A quick touch-up dab of paint, and viola! As a side note, none of my walls have cavities, either! ;-)

Haha..never heard of that before. Gel or paste? No chance of the wall being discolored from the color dyes?

LOL! I would be pinching me some heads off right about now

As for the wall, I have my bedroom walls lined with shots. Also, there are some Monets and a Dali and an Escher scattered in. Then I have some small things like a print of a painting a friend did, the school seal on the envelope my BS was in and other things hanging, too. For my pics, I have an assortment of my favorite (just because I like them) shots mixed in. There is no pattern, symmetry or flow. None of them are matted (takes up room I could squeeze another shot in with) and the frames are an eclectic assortment ranging for sunny yellow to a very thin black metal. The largest pics are 8x10 and the majority is 4x6 so I could squeeze more in. Basically, it is my wall and so long as I like it, it doesn't matter.

They are your pics. Do them how *you* want! :D

I bought some of the strips mentioned earlier. I will try them tomorrow. I'm exhausted from cleaning my tile floor. It took us about 3 hours to scrape 7 years' worth of stuff from the grout. It wasn't terrible, but it is a time consuming, back breaking job.

The wall is going to be my project and really, my hubby is all for it I just have to get it together.

Suzie,
If you are going to try to line up a bunch of framed photos, you might want you look at one of those laser gizmos. That may reduce the need for extra holes in the wall for "bad guesses" height-wise.

Just a thought. I've never used one, but often wished for one. (note to self: add to X-mas list :))

I bought those 3M things at Target. They are pricey, but I'm going to try them. You can move the picture around if not perfect.

I'd like to see some too, I've been wanting to do something like that for ages.

The laser gizmos are also useful if you have cats who need exercise :D

I'm still debating whether to repaint one basement wall that is all yellow now. I think I want to paint that side of the room white again just so the pictures are on a white wall. Still thinking about it. :)

White, paste. Mcleans is perfect, makes the place smell minty fresh too.

Ed: Also fills in bullet/pellet/BB holes rather well....

Just get about 5 brushes and dip them into 5 different paints or your choice....hold your arms out with the brushes in hand.....then spin around wild like flailing your arms every which way. I think that would look good. Let me know how it turns out as I want to try myself. Oh, but cover your floor and fixtures.

I'm really surprised that nobody has posted a pic of their walls. I love mine. I really like the consistency of all black frames. In this case they're mostly all the same exact moulding. It helps that I have access to a frame shop to build whatever size I want for cost of moulding and glass. If I get bored with one or come up with something better I just replace the print in whatever size seems best. Anyway, here is a pic of my two small walls by my pc in my basement.

Now that is what I want to do. Are these the only two walls you have done? Dosen't it get a little expensive getting the custom framing?

It's only expensive if you don't have access to frames, mats and glass. I have all that. I just need to decide how to do it. That wall is really great HQP! PM me. I'll be in SLC in a week!

Thanks for posting that. We wanted to have consistent framing as well. Target had some frames on sale about a year ago and we stocked up, 15 frames for $45 with various sizes (4x6, 5x7, and 8x10). We have also found some similar frames for the larger size shots we have too. My wife is getting anxious so I think I am going to start hanging some this week. I will post my wall if I do it.

Mike, I saw that sale and didn't need black frames at the time. I went to IKEA yesterday and their frames come with off-white mats, still pretty reasonable. I also went to Target and bought 4 frames there, black with mats. Hopefully, I'll get my act together as well and using the strips, post something. :)

It would be VERY expensive but I build the frames myself after buying the moulding. My brother sales on- line diploma frames out of his garage so he has all the tools I need. I actually got a great deal on the black moulding. I can buy it wholesale via my brother's account so I bought all I could.

Oh and yes these are the only two walls at this point. My wife won't let me take all of them. I would if I could. ;)

I have several wals of frames - I love pictures. Some tips:

You may want to look at Pottery Barn or Red Envelope - they have this rod with chains to hang the pictures from.

http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p4318/index.cfm?pkey=caccdecdis

Or, you can buy ledges and prop the pictures up.

http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p9098/index.cfm?pkey=caccdecshv

Or, don't frame and buy a large cork board to hang the pictures. Very easy to change pictures and add more.

Before you hang, clear off a space on the floor and lay out your frames. This helps to get a visual.

I buy most of my frames from Target as well. Good luck.

I just got home from WalMart. Apparently the same company that provides frames for Target makes different configurations for WalMart. I bought even more black frames. I'm printing up the 4x6 and 8x10's now.

Bet your wall is done now, huh.

I have in our family room 9 frams, all the same size, black with white matts...a selection of photo's from Israel.

I love the look.

That is so cool! Thanks, Stacie. I am going to do that in my stairway this weekend. I'm excited. I have the frames, I still need to get the pictures together. All pictures are in B&W with black frames, white mats in all different thicknesses and sizes. So, that's going to be my next project.
