I hope this question doesn't offend anyone. I currently use the Fuji s7000. I must say I have gotten pretty good with my photos in Auto. Im about to jump to the canon 5d (yes I know a huge jump, but someone is giving a price I can't refuse). Ive been told that the the 5D doesn't have a Auto mode, so my question is what literature can I read that I can learn to use the Manual, and other modes on the Canon. I want to learn how to know what to set the camera to. Please point me in the right direction.

I'd say the manual that came with the 5D is the best place to learn the basics, and plenty of POTN to learn the finer details. Welcome to the Forums :D

slap it in manual after that only the light meter will tell you what settings to use

I too made the jump from a s7000 to Canon although my jump was to a 20d I think you will not have any problems. Read the manual first and foremost, If have a s7000 and only shot in auto there will be a learning curve, but if you have used the manual features of the s7000 you ave learned a thing or two about exposer as well as the relationship between shutter and aperture in relation to exposure. you will be find, Congrats on finding a good deal on the 5d.

As for the 5d not having an auto mode, there is always P-mode. That is the next best thing to auto.

blaccicephotos,
Of course like the others here said its best in M mode where you are in control (its how I use my 5D). However the 5D does have auto mode, just use the Green Square :)

Thanks for being gentle! I can't wait. I was told by someone at the camera shop to get a light meter and the book Understanding Exposure, and the world is mine....

What do you shoot, and what are you thinking, as far as lenses?

Ronald,

I currently shoot mostly family portraits outside on location. I eventually want to get into wedding photography.

So I assume you're thinking of a 24-70L? ;-)

Good man. Make sure you get a lot of experience before trying a wedding...they're something else. I'm a regular wedding shooter, and it's an experience, to say the least.

Ronald can you recommend a good lense for me for my new 5D for weddings. That one you mentioned is about $1000, is there anything a little under that that would do fine?

Well....LOL. You can go with primes if you want, but if you're not experienced, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd suggest cheaper third party alternatives such as the Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX DG Macro, or the Tamron 28-75 2.8 XR Di IF, but the focusing is slower, and in low light, not so darn accurate. If you're getting paid, this is not acceptable. Weddings are not the time to skimp. I understand it's very expensive, but this hobby ain't cheap!

Lol,

Thats what I told my fiancee'!! This hobby is the most expensive one I have, but if I become good enough I can make a living doing what I love. Low light situations scare me the most, so you suggest sticking with the 24-70L then?

For weddings, I really do. Not many people can disagree that on FF, it's *the* lens to have. Don't be afraid of high ISO either.

I agree..if your gonna buy a lens...that has to be one of the best all around, all purpose lenses!
