I can't count the times last night I had the 70-200f/2.8 IS in the basket at B&H only to cancel the order, I am so afraid I will regret selling the 70-200 f/4 IS.
Was going to sell the 70-200f/4 IS and the 85 1.8 for the purchase but I just can't pull the plug

well, if you don't need that extra stop then i wouldn't do it. the f/4 has better IS and IQ than the f/2.8.

Um, no dis, but can you send me a link to any literature that backs that up?

If you put opinions on relative IQ aside (you will get great images from either lens), I think the main decision is whether you will shoot at 2.8 enough to justify the extra price. The 2.8 is a heavier lens as well.

I have not got any links but I remember one of the respected reviewers stating it was the sharpest Canon tele zoom they ever tested. (and they have tested them all)Check some of the review websites and you'll probably find which one. It was a big claim and I don't think anyone has really challenged it.

Can't provide anything about the IQ but the following is from Canon's site.

The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a lightweight, compact L Series telephoto zoom lens with Image Stabilizer. The optical Image Stabilization in the new EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens provides up to an incredible four stops of shake correction-a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements provides excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. These features, together with its water-and dust-proof construction, provide both the performance and portability to meet user demands.

ditto what the rest said about the larger aperture and weight issues. just don't do it for the sake of wanting to own a big ass white L ok? cause if you want a own a big ass white L, get the 600L.

Danny boy, you have just missed the $100 instant rebate on that one.
Either way, you shouldn't have sold the Colourmaster.

If you are happy with the IQ of the f/4 IS, it is doubtful the f/2.8 IS will give you any better. BTW, I have sold my Colourmaster too(;)) and I am content with my f/4 non-IS zoom.

Peter I am very happy with the f/4 but I will be shooting some gymnastics and not sure if the f/4 will be fast enough.
