Has anyone here ever tried to take the logos off of a Lowepro bag? It looks like you can remove the stitching around the edges and it should come right off.

I am hoping that someone else has tried so that I don't ruin my bag.

Is there reason?

I assume so people don't know it's a camera bag... so you don't get ripped off.

I find just looking mean, and carrying a quick opening blade to be deterrent enough... so far  My method has only been tested on two occassions though. I still own all of my equipment, however

If anyone cares to test their own methods, city streets between the hours of 12:00-3:00am are prime (from experience) :|

Just for stealthiness reasons. I won't bother with my small bags but the big one has more to protect. Plus I just hate logos. The darn thing has about 4.

Yes...they come off easily. It takes a few days before the little holes disaappear, but they do.

As for the look mean carry a knife theory. I prefer the looks mean carry lot of insurance and live to take more photos option. To each their own....

I was half joking before, but seriously I have a rather scandalous background, so much so, that I don't think many would believe me if I were to tell it

Anyway, I agree it's better to avoid confrontation. I do whatever I can to avoid it, but if someone insists on pushing the issue, I'm willing to push back with "necessary" force to avoid becoming seperated from my personal property. Thieves are like dogs anyway. If they sense fear, they'll be all over you... or if you look like a tourist/sucker. Why would you chance getting pummeled, when you can just go on to the next guy, who will just give it up willingly? They're like electricity, just following the path of least resistance.

Okay, I realize I'm just trying to justify my tough guy approach. I know it's the wrong way... but it's just so effective  If I suddenly disappear from the forum someday, this may be why :? :)

I've not been put in such a situation in sooo long I honestly have no Idea how I would react.. :?

But I can say this.. I think I'd have an awefull hard time handing over the MkII... being about 3 times the price of any previous "most expensive thing I've ever purchased"... I'd have a lot of trouble handing it to some scumball :x

In fact I'd certainly like to think that .. unless there were a gun or other significant weapon involved.. that I would absolutely NOT be reasonable with the villains.

That said.. It's all insured ...

I'm sure I would believe you. We weren't all angels.

On topic... I was on a photo safari with a friend and we were on some bleachers watching a rodeo. We had our camera bags between our feet. The bags were safe as there was no access to them from under the seats but some bleachers are open and a person can scoop a bag from between your feet easily if there is access. He told me a story about how it had happened to him before at a sporting event.

So if I were to walk around Manhattan with my Lowepro filled with expensive gear, would I be alright as long as it is daylight? When and where would you say I should worry about having a lot of gear (and possibly looking like a tourist) in New York?

Any ideas? :o

There is an old infantry soldier's trick to avoid the loss of a rifle. A rifle has a strap on it similar to a camera bag strap. While you are sitting there, you simply wrap one loop of the strap around your ankle. If anybody tries to grab it while the owner is not paying attention, the ankle alarm is sounded.

I don't unstitch them, I just colour the whole logo in with a black marker pen. Then becomes very understated. Better all black than black grey and orange. :)

Slight OT... Theft proof bags...
Who would steal a diaper bag?
Even a new looking one!
Put a bar of fragrent baby soap in it like you are masking the real contents...

People forget or loose these things all the time but they never get stolen...

Just did it. They come off like a dream. Now the only people that will know I have camera gear will have some of their own most likely.

If only I could disguise the hunched over back and the sweat pouring from my forehead.

The diaper bag thing is common. Most don't carry it around though.
Putting your nice bag inside a scummy looking bag or diaper bag is not easy to use (a bag in a bag) but it will keep everyone from saying "Hey look over at that fellow with the news camera gear in that shiny new bag".

The telltale sign of a photographer carrying a heavy shoulder bag... there is a half-inch groove in his shoulder (from the strap).

I prefer the method of Concealed Weapons Carry :) let them take your bag as they run off FIre a few rounds of .45 JHP :)
