This does not really involve a sporting event, but it does involve a sports figure.

For years, the students at Wake Forest have celebrated victories by "rolling the quad." This tradition involves going to the quadrangle of the small campus and adorning the trees with toilet paper. The events are usually raucus, depending on the opponent and the importance of the game. Perhaps the largest "rolling" occurred following last year's ACC Championship in football -- a shocker, to say the least.

In basketball, the Deacons have always had to play second fiddle (or third, or fourth) to Duke, UNC or even NC State. So, on the occasions where the Deacs managed a victory the quad got pretty busy. A few years ago, WFU pulled out an overtime victory against a highly rated Duke team. The basketball coach, Skip Prosser, told one of the students in the melee at Joel Coliseum, "I'll meet you on the quad at midnight." And, in the middle of the night, the coach and his team celebrated their win with the rest of the student body.

On Thursday, Skip passed away from a heart attack. He left us much too soon, at the age of 56. He has been recognized by sports writers around the US in touching articles, but the students (only a few hundred are in summer school) felt it would be best to celebrate his life as they celebrated his wins -- by rolling the quad at midnight. This "rolling" was not rolicking, but rather was a quiet tribute to a special member of the community. Skip will definitely be missed.
