Although it is silly and crazy to go that far, don't assume that someone won't freak out on you for something you said on the internet. For God's sake, be careful out there!

I have met some people from the internet but I'm usually pretty careful about doing so. I never meet anybody from a social networking site. I'll meet people if it's interesting or useful to do so. I'm pretty much a loner anyway, prefering to work alone or be with family.

We're hearing about all the whackos now...
The UK Home Secretary turned out to be a security risk as he had a penchant for picking up gay men on Clapham Common then getting mugged (he did this a couple of times).
Drunken astronauts.
Astronauts that try to kidnap love rivals, according to the press.
Weapons-systems operators that burn down people's homes.
Policemen (in the UK) that beat drinkers in bars to death for fun.
I was stalked for about 6 months by one guy who was completely whacked in the head. Fortunately he got bored and went somewhere else as the police didn;t do anything due to the UK not having an anti-stalking law at the time. He'd been set on me by some nutter on the internet that I'd met and not particularly liked.
The fact is we're surrounded by people who can flip unexpectedly. There is no such thing as somebody who doesn;t have their own agenda. Sometimes those agendas can get really out of whack with reality. We try to rise above it and most manage most of the time. How many times have you done something crazy when you've been in love or when you've been harassed by somebody? It's normal human nature.

I wondered the same thing, but unfortunately the internet time or internet feuds are not the types of questions that would be asked during a background check.

Yeah, this fruitcake is handling some of the most sophisticated weapons the Navy has. I lived on that base as a teenager. It's the location of the Naval Surface Weapons Center where the Navy does extensive testing of new weapons systems for the fleet.

I've seen it too. I used to be a bartender in a blue-collar corner bar. It's a heck of a lot more frequent in the neighborhood bar than it is on the internet. Of course, everybody in the bar is "lubricated" a bit, so that's expected.
What isn't expected is for somebody to travel through several states to settle the score. Even the barroom feuds tend to blow over, with many adversaries becoming friends within a short period.

Speaking of barroom brawls, I shot a birthday party in a nightclub last night, first time I have been to a club in about 10 years. Apart from feeling very old I was amazed by the amount of cops outside at closing time. 3 wagons filled with bobbies and still fights broke out, but interestingly most were between women.
The spice girls have a lot to answer for ;)

By the global gathering here at POTN, there are probably well lubricated people all the time :-)

3 important facts to keep in mind when witnessing women fighting:
1. They are probably not fighting over you.
2. It's not like in the movies - cloths will not get torn off, and two half-naked babes will not plunge into a pit of mud and begin wrestling in a provocative manner.
3. Do NOT try to break it up. Let it resolve itself. By trying to break it up, all that will happen is that you will end up being the target of both. And you really can't fight back. The best you can do is tuck your chin and put your arms up to protect your face. They will stop eventually. Probably....

Article (http://techdirt.com/articles/20070726/232206.shtml)
Taking 'Flamewar' A Bit Too Seriously: Man Drives 1,300 Miles To Burn Down Home Of Online Critic (http://techdirt.com/articles/20070726/232206.shtml)
from the yeah,-maybe-let-that-one-go dept
Online flamewars certainly can get nasty at times, often boiling over into quite a bit of rage -- but it's still pretty rare (and amazing) to see that anger then boil over into the real world. Last year, we wrote about a case in the UK where someone drove 70 miles to attack the guy he was sparring with online (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20061017/165342.shtml). The press referred to it as "web rage," though, rage doesn't tend to last that long. Or, perhaps it does. Here in the US we do things in bigger ways, apparently. A guy in Virginia who got into a flamewar online decided to make it a bit more literal, and drove 1,300 miles to Waco, Texas to burn down the home of one of this online enemies (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20070726.wgtpsycho27/BNStory/Technology/?page=rss&id=RTGAM.20070726.wgtpsycho27) from a (no, this isn't a joke) picture sharing community. Not only that, but the attacker took photos of each "Welcome to State X" signs and shared them online as he made his way across the country -- to let others in the community know he was serious about going after the other guy. What did the one guy do to piss the other guy off? Apparently he had different political views and posted a silly photo claiming the other guy was a nerd. Nerd or not, he's now a convicted arsonist. He's been sentenced to 7 years in prison for burning down the other guy's home -- but it doesn't sound like the intervening time or pending jail time cooled this guy down. As the sentencing was happening, the arsonist used his cameraphone to take snapshots of the guy whose home he tried to burn down, apparently to post online as well (though, the court ordered the photos destroyed). So, while the typical admonition to those engaging in flame wars is to remember that it's a real person on the other side, we'd also like to add "who may be so crazy that they'll come burn down your house."
