Hi all,

I recently had the pleasure of getting my hands on a used 28-70 2.8 L and I must say - wow.

Its my second L, and truly believe I can never go back to consumer lenses now.

Anyway, it seams absolutely ridiculous that such a popular lens (before the 24-70 2.8 it was the top lens, sort of) doesn't have an archive too.

So post em!

Mike!, do your thing :D

Here is one - look how sharp it is!
(Not edited in any way, this photo is strait out of the camera. Not even levels...)

gidi, how much did u pay for it?

Gidi Morris
9th of August 2007 (Thu), 09:17
I payed about 600$, but don't forget I live in Israel so when it was bought first hand - it was already much more expensive than in the states.
Originally this lens cost about 1400$ in Israel, and now you cannot find a new copy here- only second hand.

Anyway - this seems to me a great way to go if you can't afford the 24-70, since it's image quality is as good (some reviews say it isn't as good, while others claim it is better. This leads me to believe they are both the same, and only differ for the same reason all lenses differ - uneven quality management), the AF is only slightly slower (I do PJ work and haven't had a problem with it's AF speed at all) & 4mm less on the wide end - you sure mis those 4mm but they aren't worth the extra 700$-900$...

Here is another shot I took a few minutes ago-
I'm trying to figure out the focus & DOF characteristics of this lens, since all lenses differ in this respect...

Here you have the original untouched image, and an example of where you can get with a mild Unsharp mask adjustment.

Hi guys, these are a couple samples of pictures taken using canon 28-70 F 2.8 L + Canon 30D camera, I am new to digital photography I got this lens for my trusty EOS 3, 35mm camera about 6 yeras ago, I use it as my all purpose lens and so far I am very happy with the results. I am an amateur so if there is something wrong with the pics blame it on the photographer for the camera, the lens, and the models (my kids) are all good :)

I purchased one of these beauties yesterday. Might have payed a bit too much, but it's in near mint condition and comes with the hood, and I also got a one year warranty as well as the right to return it within two months.

Here is a shot from yesterday, edited and with a little USM added:
(28mm, ISO 400, f/3.2, 1/800)

I had my camera at an event where flash photography was not allowed. My son is in the choir and they had an evening with a local singer. To record history I had the 40D set at ISO 3200 and took a few shots at F4

If you're browsing this thread you're probably comparing the 24-70 and the 28-70 2.8L's. Here's a great comparison of the two with side by side identical settings shots.

Just picked this lens up today as well. i needed something for starting on my wedding photography. i was considering the 24-70mm but it was just way too expensive for me now. i must say, this lens is great! colour and contrast are superb! the reverse zoom mechanism was a little odd at first but i'm already used to it. the size and weight are not even an issue to me. so many people complain about the weight of a lens but i find no problems shooting with a heavy lens all day.

Hey people!

I have the chance to get a 28-70L for about 550$ (380€). It was built 1995 and is in good condition. There's one "problem" - you can't use the manual focus. You can use it on one-shot mode, but the AF/M swich has no effect as far as I know. Is that a fair price? What do you think?

chioque
29th of September 2009 (Tue), 21:18
IMHO the price is fair. but please take it with a pinch of salt as I'm not an expert. This lens is brilliant and I like that the images from the lens, to me, are slightly warmer than those from 24-70L.

But I would like to share my story about the lens. I bought a good conditioned one a couple of years back for about RM2,500 or USD750. Then early this year the lens had some problems with the AF motor and I sent the lens to Canon Malaysia for servicing. A day after, the Canon rep called me and said they had run out of spare parts for the lens. However in return they offered me an upgrade to a brand new 24-70L subject that I paid Canon an extra RM1,000 or roughly USD280. Of course I took up their offer :)

Hi Omaru,

Good to see you enjoying your new lens. Really liking the black and white shot of the Eiffel Tower. Superb atmosphere with the mist.

Just wondering how you found the sharpness, colour and contrast of the 28-70 rates against your 70-200 and 50mm? And I hope people don't mind me asking in the 28-70L thread, but hows the 1dII for the noise at 1600 - could I print at 8X10 with no real evidence of noise if I used a plug-in to reduce noise? And how about 3200 I guess thats no good at 8x10?

Sorry for all the questions!

Happy shooting,
Josh

It's most probably because this lens is so old and Canon probably doesn't even repair it anymore but it's still a great lens.

I think 2009 was the last year that Canon offered repairs for this lens. Contact a Canon service center and ask them if they will still service this lens. You might get lucky and they'll replace it with a refurbished 24-70, unless of course you really want the older lens which some people actually prefer.

Hi to all,
I'm thinking to buy a 24-70L (1100 euros new, ca. 900 used here in Italy) but this morning I have the opportunity to buy one 28-70L (630 euros): what do you think? The new one 24-70L quality, justify to add 270 euros? Or is better to go with 28-70L?

I`ve got mine 28-70 for about 2 years now, and it is still a great lens! Sharp wide open, beautiful colours (slightly warmer then the 24-70 I think) and good contrast. If you dont mind the 4mm extra and the weathersealing I`d buy the 28-70 L.

Ok, time for me to post in this thread. (dont think ive done so yet). bought this lens about 4 or 5 years ago and love it. had it calibrated by canon as soon as i bought it (2nd hand) and it has served me well. have no desire for the 24-70...i shoot a 5d classic and the weather sealing will serve me no benefit. i dont miss the 4mm and this copy is sharper than my friends 24-70.

had to post the obligatory fireworks shots from Sunday. all were shot with the 28-70 on the 5d classic. iso around 200 and f9 if i remember correctly. most were 5 second exposures (i think i started at 4 seconds but wanted more trails). anyway...Happy 4th to my US friends or any of my international friends who chose to celebrate with us...

I've got mine for a month now and I love it! The best lens i came across so far. Works like a dream with 5d mkII! Instead 24-70mm I bought this one and for money I've saved I bought cir-pol, two batteries, black rapid strap and lowepro camera bag!!!

Awesome lens! - VERY sharp too! The only weakness I can find is that it's a tad soft when it's wide open at 70mm. Wide open at 28mm is razor sharp....VERY pleased with it!! Pretty bulky lens though...LOL!

I´m getting my copy next week or so. Can´t wait!! It´s going to be my first L lens.

Can anyone tell me if the exterior build is metal or plain plastic like the mid-grade USM lenses? I´ll be sure to post my first photos here!

Just a heads up guys and gals....

I recently got an estimate to fix the loose feeling zoom ring on my copy...Otherwise, the lens is perfect.

Per PhotoTech in NYC:

New Helicoil assembly: 135.00
New zoom ring: 50.00
Realign, clean, test, labor 150.00

Now keep in mind that these are NYC prices...so your mileage may vary....

That said: I LOVE this lens.

Yup, my copy is back-focusing a bit on my body, more noticeably towards 70. Do you happen to know if PhotoTech will do the calibration with/for my body?

I think this is a forgotten lens. There is a culture on this site that if the lens is no longer supported by Canon then they don't wan't anything to do with it. The truth is this lens is the direct forerunner of the 24-70 and is generally considered better by a slim margin. Yep, you lose 4mm on the wide end, but in most instances, that small difference is inconsequential. I'll take this lens over the 24-70 every day. I can afford the 24-70, but I want the best lens, and this one beats the 24-70 by a small margin, plus it's less expensive. I'll take my chances on support.

The lens was replaced 8 years ago - I don't find the relative silence unusual, nor do I think that it's at all indicative of the performance of the model. I'll probably drop mine off for calibration sometime this weekend, and post all kinds of asinine cat and dog pics, afterward, if you really want. :D

Pietá

I understand it was replaced, but since its pretty much the same, I wouldn´t expect everyone to switch to the new one.

I can afford the 24-70L as well, but since the performance of a well taken care of 28-70 is as good or better then the 24-70L, I bougth the less expensive one. Obviously, only did it because it was pristine, it´s as good as new, wouldn´t have bougth it if I could only find damaged copies.

It´s arriving either this week or in the beginning of the next. I´ll post some shots of it and taken with it asap! Then its time to wrap it since its supposed to be one of the christmas presents. :(

yes the lens is sharp. i do notice from time to time that the right side of the frame has issues. i havent narrowed down which focal lengths are causing it, nor am i too concerned about it. could be user error as far as i know. just seems that sometimes that side of the frame is off when i feel it should not have been. for the most part this is not noticeable in print nor when viewing the entire image. only noticeable at 100%. if my clients want to view all their images at 100% then thats on them, but they are all happy with the results. all that being said...there have been many times that i have considered trading for a 35L. dont think that will happen though. probably just save and buy the 35 when the time is right. as well as a 50, 85, 135 and 200 1.8 but those are all different stories!

First one at f3.2 and second one wide open at f2.8
(don't worry about the colours in the windows, it was changing from pink to purple,... that's why they look a bit odd :)

This IQ is the main reason I prefer the 28-70 f2.8L to the 24-105 f4 (which I only had 6 months), fast f2.8, nice background blur for portraits, less vignetting and sharp on all mm's, it's like having 3 primes 28 - 50 -70mm!

My copy of this lens may be for sale very soon if anyone is interested, I plan on buying the 24-70 to replace it's predecessor. Something tells me I may not notice much difference between the two in IQ, but I would like the extra 4mm on the wide end and the security of not having such an old piece of glass.

My copy of this lens may be for sale very soon if anyone is interested, I will be using the funds to put towards it's predecessor although something tells me I may not notice much difference between the two, but I would like the extra 4mm on the wide end. \

Here's some more images with my copy, it has yet to let me down!

Well its predecessor was the 28-80mm f/2.8-4L. I assume you meant the successor?

Anyway, call me crazy but considering trading mine for a 24-105. Losing a stop but gaining 4mm on the short end and 35mm on the long end with the addition of approximately 3 stops of IS is tempting. Have my 50 1.4 on the way and getting a 135L, so i should be covered for low light.

Anyone here think this is a bad idea? Really quite torn.

Totally not what I meant to write, I meant to write buy a 24-70 to replace it's predecessor, my bad.

I wouldn't necesserily call you crazy, but I would say the IQ of either the 28 or 24-70 is much better within the range covered by the 24-105. Sharper, better colour reproduction, etc etc. With that being said, depending on what you shoot a lot of the IS is always tempting, although at around 105mm on my 70-200 I have never felt much need for it. Hell even at 200 with a decently high shutter speed (I'm talking slightly over 1/60th I don't even find it bad.

well the other consideration for the added FL is the fact that im selling the 70-200 f/4 to fund the 135L. i certainly dont want to start the debate on the 28/24-70 vs 24-105, as that has been beaten to death on these boards. ive seen good and bad copies of both lenses.

Most of the use will be weddings as well as family portrait work...24-105 filling in for some ceremony use and mostly formal / groups that i normally wouldnt shoot at 2.8 to begin with. it probably wont see much use as the sun goes down, even with IS. thats where the 50 and 135 come in. i will also be carrying the 200 1.8, that being my GO TO portrait lens. of course, i have to rely on local rental for that (for now).

Yeh that sounds like a good plan for your situation, the 135L is definitely my next lens purchase.

well the 28-70 is no longer available for trade for a 24-105. i have been watching the completed items on ebay and they sale prices have been ridiculous! so i think i will be holding out for the 35L

Just got my 28-70L in today, wow. This kind of zoom works so well when taking pictures of kids, lol. I should've known better.

:-) Welcome to owning a great peice of old glass. I was pumped when I received mine as well and took the first shots! Sadly now I find it being my least used lens for whatever reason.

Hello folks,

I have EF28-70 2.8L USM lens and use it with Canon EOS 40D. Could any of you advise me where to take it for a check up here, in Phoenix area? I sent it to Canon, but they returned it back to me un-checked. They could not refer me to any lens repair facilities either.

I thought, lenses like this caliber you buy for a lifetime, not for 10 years :-(

Thank you all

I'm planning to buy 5Dc + 28-70L + 135L some time this/next year. Would it be enough for everyday walkaround? I'm kinda torn between 28-70 and used 24-70. 18mm on kit lens is wide enough for me so 28mm on FF shouldn't be much of a problem, but I found out that I like the shorter MFD on 24-70 more, which on should I buy? Also, a bit off (this) topic I liked the 135L more than the 70-200 f4L when I tested them at local store, but would it be too limiting if I buy 135L then 70-200 2-3 years later? Thanks in advance.
