when shooting low light and using 800 ISO, is there a way of reducing noise in the photoshop RAW processor?

Underfotunately high ISO and underexposure are the recipe for photo noise. You can adjust the noise reduction setting in ACR and RSE when converting the RAW. I believe Canon's DPP has similar feature as well. If that's not sufficient, Noise Ninja and Neat Image both offer Photoshop plug-in that you can use.

I think it's CS3 that has noise reduction but older versions really don't have one. Noise Ninja is popular among many for noise reduction, other programs like RawShooter or even DPP has noise reduction in RAW.

The better the exposure, the less the noise. One way is to be sure that you're not underexposing the highlights before you shoot, but you will still get some noise in the dark areas of the shot. ISO 200-6400 20D Tests (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=269964)

Did you try the Details tab? There should be two controls there, one for chroma noise and one for luma noise.

Generally, though, it's best not to do much, if any, noise reduction in Raw. The NR there applies to the entire image, and the best way to do NR is to apply it selectively. You want to do NR in the areas that have little detail because it's there that the noise stands out, but you want to do little or no NR in areas with a lot of detail because the NR will reduce the detail more than it reduces the noise. NR on skin needs to be very carefully done, lest the skin turn out looking like plastic.

Besides, the plugins like NeatImage, Noise Ninja, and Noiseware do a lot better job than the NR controls in Adobe Camera Raw do.
