View Full Version : A little advice....

So I have a nice old manual SLR, which shoots great pictures.... if they stay still. And I mean very still. So I'm going to buy me a DSLR.... I'm actually going to buy a nikon d70, but keep that quiet cos I already feel like a cuckoo in the nest with my pentax (of course I'm relying on the bank manager to release the money, so the purchase may be off after speaking to her tomorrow).

Anyway I'll get to the point. I'm off for a weeks sailing in sardinia in about a month and want to get the camera in time for that. I haven't got much experience with digital so I don't really know how much memory to buy. My feeling is that I should buy 2x 512mb cards, but I'm keen on saving money so can I get away with only one?

Also any advice on buying a DSLR would be great. Esp. if anyone can recommend a decent online company to buy it through. Otherwise I'll buy it through my local company who are pretty good but also pretty expensive.

Regards,

S

Depends on what size pics you plan to take. 2PM, 3MP, etc. Eventually, you'll fill one up in about 1/2 hour, so get two. I have 2 & need more!

You will probably get about 125 or so large jpg's on a 512mb card. If you have a laptop or some other means of d/ling shots, no problem. If you don't plan to shoot much, you should be ok as well, but I have a hunch that the new toy will not be out of your hands very much.

2 512's should pretty safe, imo.

2x512mb if u r gonna carry extra portable storage, otherwise i don't think u got enough for the entire trip.

i personally have 2x512mb, 1x1GB and 1x2GB, since i started to shoot more and more RAW, i find the cards r filled up really quickly. But jpg should last u a bit longer, but won't be that much longer.

about the brand, i recommend Sandisk Ultra II, it's fast, it's reliable and it has a lift time warranty. Lexar is slightly more expensive and not as fast as Ultra II(60/66x, lexar is 40x)

so it's really depends on ur needs and how many pictures u r going to take, for 1GB, it gives me about 407 large fine jpegs on my 10D, just to give u an idea.

I would not recommend going on a vacation (Sardinia! exotic for me) with a *new* camera that I am not used to.
IMHO, you are setting yourself up for disappointment regardless of which camera or how much memory. Much better to stick to the pentax for now and breakin in a camera before the next trip. my $0.02 :)

I'm going to have to disagree on the whole use your old camera stuff. The day after I recieved my Canon Digital Rebel I went out to a botanical garden and took some amazing photo's. Oh and I would recomend the Canon Digital Rebel over the D70. Another option to the CF card debate would be to get one of those portable Roadstor's that burn your CF directly to cd's giving you a endless amount of picture storage. *Shameless plug* I am selling mine because I have 4x512mb CF and 4x256mb CF's and never need more than that. I would give it away for $100 shoot me a email nismo_ian@hotmail.com

Thanks for all the advice guys. Went into town yesterday and spent some time comparing the 300D and the D70. Went for the D70 and have been playing with it ever since. Very excited!

RE: the memory card, they threw in a 1gb for free in the end so there was no choice to make 8) .

Thanks Bob, I'd had my suspicions for some time

I know what you mean. I think I'm gonna take both. That way I can get some practice with the new one, but make sure I get the best pics with my pentax.
