Would one of these monsters fit on a 300D? If so, has anyone got any feedback, sample images or advice regarding the combo?

When you deal with lenses the size of the Sigma and camera bodies the size of the Digital Rebel, the lens does not fit onto the body. The body fits onto the lens!
You mount the lens on a tripod, and then you mount the body onto the lens.

Point taken!
Doesn't really answer my question, though?

All EOS bodies fit all EF mount lenses.. with the SOLE exception of the single "EFS" lens that comes with the Rebel,... so yes it "fits" :)
This lens is a great bargain for what it can do. Although.. the price has gone up recently.. making it less competitive new compared to the Canon 100-400mm L IS.. (Canon's nearest competitor)
The Sigma is exceedingly well made.. tough easy to use and very good glass.
It weighs a LOT... I would insist on using at least a monopod.

I've been thinking about it lately. Since i'm getting the 70-200 f/2.8 (aparently not until next month now due to some bills  ). Maybe i'd be better off getting the 50-500 rather then the 100-400 to fill in my "super tele" lens.
It's cheaper, and longer, granted no IS, Slower, and less form an optics POV...oh the decisions.

i know a paporazi in london who uses this lens day n night to snap celebrities, that's all i know, it doesn't seem to be a popular choice among real "photographers"
ignore my spelling mistakes if there is any(i'm sure there is, just too tired to check)

Tim didn't you hate your old Sigma? (Or still do?)
Also note that CDS no longer has that Sigma, and now packs a 100-400 L....

I hate my current sigma yes...
70-300 f/4-f/5.6
The auto focus is slow
The optics are ****
It does nice macros though i have to admit that.
However your really compairing apples to orange, at least i would hope so for sigmas sake as this lens retails for $250-ish i belive where as the 50-500 is what? $900?
In the end i'm sure i'll stick with canon, but the extra 100mm is tempting, i'm just not sure if another 100 blurry mm's is worth not waiting for my bank account to grow.

How do you define a 'real' photographer. I also know a freelancer who constantly uses his 50-500 to "snap" celebrities ... and he makes a fair buck at it ... I'd consider him a 'real' photographer. He's making money. I also use the 50-500, mostly for birding and nature shots, which have been published. The other day there was a huge fire on the Toronto Islands. I live several miles away, but have a great view of the downtown skyline and Islands. I took several pics with the 50-500, and emailed them to one of our newspapers. One of my photos ran the next day.

don't get me wrong, i wasn't point at a whole group, maybe i wasn't clear, but as knowing him, all he cares is money, and i've seen the photos he took, they r not bad, but nothing stands out, basically he uses D1X as a point to shoot, everything set to auto, as long as target is in the frame, click click.
anyway, i went to Jessops and saw this lens, it's quite chunky! not the length i was expecting for a 500mm, but certainly a big monster to carry, the finish and build is no way as good as Canon 70-200mm L
