Ok, so I go to the store the other day, they had a 28-135mm IS in the shop, so i tried it out...hated it, it was the next lense on my shopping list...i dont know why id idnt like it, the focus seemed weird and i didnt get any results that i was happy with, esp at longer focal lengths, plus i was pissed cause they wanted like $700 for it...

so...EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM is next on the list. Anyone have any biffs with it? I need some zoom, and Im itchin to add anything with L on it to my 2 lense collection :D

You're making a good choice, as long as you can live with the fact that the lens is a "low-end" L...

I've had the 28-135 for a few years that went on my D30. I got a 10D a couple weeks ago and shot a bit with the 28-135. This week I got a 70-200 f/4 and the difference is amazing. I'm going to dump my 28-135, or leave it on the D30.

low end ? as in not worth the money?

No. As in, one of the cheapest L lenses :D
If you read between the threads on this forum, you'll find that it's most likely worth every penny. I'll own one eventually... or who knows, maybe even the f/2.8

That lens is next on my lest.

I'm selling ALL the lenses below just to help pay for that beast :)

the 70- 200 is a good lens, very sharp and contrasty. the 28-135 is a very good non-L lens, and can be very sharp.

i only have a crappy $19 quantrary tripod, is the lense heavy enough to require a ring? Ive never delt with a larger lense before...

thanks again

In my opinion, no. The tripod ring for the 70-200f/4.0L is sold separately, is expensive and I don't think it's necessary. The lens is lighter than the 10D + BG-ED3 so if the idea is to reduce the strain on the lens mount then using a tripod ring is pointless.

I actually bought the 70-200f/4L in preference to the f/2.8 because of it's light weight. I find it very easy to hand hold (p.s. I haven't seen the inside of a gym in years so we're not talking about muscles liKe Arnie here ;) )

I have the 70-200 f/4L and love it, I also dont have the ring, The lens is not that heavy so have not had the nead for it yet. I considered the 2.8 but went with the f/4 for weight reasons, dont get me wrong the 2.8 is an awsome lens but for me so far the f/4 works fine, even if I have to bump up the ISO to get the shot. The 70-200 f/4L is great. Its made taking pic for me so much more fun. I think the other folk have summed it all up very well. These shots taken with that lens (no lens hood) are straight out of the camera with no post processing.

So get the waterproof housing :P, and then you're untouchable :D Nothing can stop you.
OR a plastic bag and some duct tape :)

ok, i got it, the sun was pretty much down byt the time i got a chance to open the box...sadly

but the grip on the zoom makes a slight noize at lower lengths, usually coming back up from 70mm...not to be a freak or anything, is this normal? its not loud...but it sounds like a scratching noise...i can feel it slightly too...could it just need a good ol'fasion breaking in?

Its probably the rubber "O" rings or seals squeaking a bit.
