After a week of hassling around with different companies and cancelling and ordering from other places and all kinds of other hassles, it FINALLY came yesterday evening around 5:30PM! Unfortunately it came just as the movers were arriving to move me, so it's basically been sitting around untouched for almost a day until just a little while ago.

My first impression....SWWWEEEEEEEEEEEETTTT!! I LOVE it! I got the 28-135 USM IS and WOW is the IS awesome. I'm really glad I ended up getting it. Gotta eat now, was just so excited I had to tell someone and I don't know anyone here in the new place so you guys have to listen! Here is one of the first shots out of it, my little sister's cat...

If you look in that same directory there is a very larger version of the same pic.

Very nice shot!

I wish to buy 28-135 USM IS too.

But I heard from some reviews it is soft on wide open and
the auto focus is slow in low light.

What is your advice?

Well I honestly haven't gotten to use it a whole lot yet, but thus far I am very very impressed with it. I don't think the AF is slow in low light, the shot above of the cat was taken with only one lamp on and a 1 second shutter speed handheld. I'll come back to this thread and post a more detailed opinion once I have time to use it a bit more this week.

I have used that lens for a year now and I really like it. With ring-type USM the focus is fast and the IS is great. I don't find it soff, but what are we comparing it to?

In low light the AF will be slower on any lens with a small aperture, if you really want a lens with faster AF in low light and better sharpness wide open then there are more suitable lenses available.

I would suggest the 24-70 f2.8L and the 70-200 f2.8L IS lenses, probably Canon's 2 best zooms. Read the reviews, they are sharp wide open, fast AF, good brightness and contrast, tack sharp generally.

The only reason I got the 28-135 IS was because I had blown my budget buying my 10D and couldn't stretch the credit card further to get better lenses. For really sharp pictures at wide apertures I have the really cheap 50mm f1.8 lens. Sometimes it can be necessary to compromise on performance for the sake of being able to afford the gear.

I am a beginning photographer graduating from G3. I found the 28-135 IS sharp enough for my eyes. I have to agree the focus is not as fast as my sigma but I got used to it after a while and don't regret buying the lens. Also this translates to a very good usable range to have it on the camera when outside. I don't have an iota of regret over this lens for the price I spent for it.

I love my 28-135. It was the first lens I purchesd for my EOS3 4-5 years ago. I was immediately impressed by the quality it produced. Since then I have purchased the 70-200Lf4 which is also superb. More recently I added the 17-40Lf4 to the collection in anticipation of my 10D arriving. Since receiving the 10D I've used the 17-40 more frequently, nonetheless I'm sure that you can imagine my horror when I picked up my 28-135 while on vacation and discovering that there was very noticable fungus growth on the internal lenses
I resisted the temptation to dismantle the lense and it is now at Canon who I hope can repair it - read some scary stories about how fungus can eat the coatings.
