When I took this shot last night , I was kind of excited about it's potential but working with it as best I could, I'm not sure if I can make it into what I saw. I'm a bit disapointed but will ask for your thoughts

Nah just needs a little help. Heres something I did very quickly just to give you the idea. Magic wand tool, quick mask and levels.

Didn't hold back the flowers on the bootom which I should have but its detailed and you can get it with the quick mask and magic wand tools. But you get the idea.

In this one the flowers are better but the sky is a little overdone. Oh well you get the idea?

Shannon,

Great minds think alike....

Theres a couple of books you could pick up one of my favorite is Visual Quick Start.

Just play around with the magic wand tool and quick mask. Thats probably all the image needs.

Sadly I cannot see the image above so I'm not sure what it looks like after they edited it. I'm big on saturated/contrasty images so here's what I did...

Done by playing with Shadows/Highlights under Ajustments in Photoshop and then adding contrast and saturation.

For me I would edit it in black and white and darken it more.

"My debts, err I mean my gear" - That's funny! I actually am looking to go $1k in debt myself so I can have some L lenses for my customers. Hahaha.

In any case I print screened it for you so you can see the settings I used, this was in CS2 instead of CS3. I actually guess they improved it in CS3 because I cannot get it to look the same as the first one I did. :(

The colour one, i don;t see this one in bw...the colours and the sun make a big part of this picture.

I think sometimes I need to step away from black and whites. :)

You can use the relatively bright sky to your advantage if something like this appeals to you:

194300

Or if you prefer to see the colour in all it's glory :):

194301

I really like the border nick, i have to learn how to do that ;-)

In Photoshop, I just go to Image > Canvas Size, switch to relative and extend both height and width with an extension colour of white. Then I do it a 2nd time with an extension colour of black with about 4 times the first amount.

That's a great trick Nick.

I really like this picture, the sky to me is over exposed, but probably better than what I could do. I messed with it a little

Well I thought it was a tough shot to make so it wouldn't suprise me if the sky was over exposed by an increment. Going back I'd probably do it slightly differen't , but I don't think I could have done without the PP

I think the detail brought out makes the black and white much more interesting, I've seen the sun and colourful flowers before. It draws attention to the statue much more.

play with the sky and make it a little more dramatic... clone away the buidling behind, it's really has nothing to do with the composition and the subjects here... I think Black and white or IR version with some PS on the sky would make this picture really stunning...

I think I understand what is troubling you.
There were really two separate photos here, and you combined them into one.
If you have a chance to shoot it over, I would separate the sunset and skyline shot into its own, and then try to find another perspective for the statue shot.
As it is, the two disparate subjects are playing ping-pong with the brain.

That's a very good point Bob, I never thought of it that way. I may have actually been trying to get too much into this picture. thanks for your perspective
